New clutch noises???
« on: Mar 06, 2005, 05:22:30 PM »
I just finished installing a new clutch in my 85 4runner.  Now the clutch makes squealing noise when I pust the clutch petal in and out.  If I hold the clutch pedal halfway out, it will continue to make the noise.  Am I correct in thinking that the noise is coming from the throw out bearing?  Both the throw out and pilot bearings are new.  Is this normal for a new clutch?

Thanks

Did you properly grease the fork piviot, nose cone, bearing clips, and slave cylinder rod like you were supposed to? Also mixing antiseeze with the grease is a good idea, and i also place a small amount of antiseeze on the input shaft of my trans so the clutch disk can move freely.

Yep, I greased everything that needed to be.  The TO bearing is on the correct way.  I did not put grease on the input shaft on the splins.  The squealing sound is gone now.  However, I can still hear the bearing making noise when I let the clutch out in neutral.
Thanks for the help/ideas.

if your refering to the clutch disk, you will need a clutch disk allignment tool, its a simple plastic tool that is splined to match your input shaft splines and hold up your disk while tightening the pressure plate. I highly recommend using a torque wrench on the pressure plate, and some blue locktite, and the flywheel bolts if you are installing that as well. the tool can be found at any local parts store, they usually come with a new clutch, if you have problems I can express mine to ya. I hope this was what you were referring to    :headscratch:

My clutch kit did come with an alignment tool which I used.  Worked great.  I used a toruqe wrench on everything and toruqed everything down according to my 85 factory manual.  However, I did not use any locktite on the flywheel or preasure plate bolts.
The noise is all but gone now.  I think I'm in the clear.  This was the first clutch I've ever done so I didn't know if it was normal or not.

Locktite is not required. Glad the noise went away ;)
