Strange Noises
« on: Sep 01, 2004, 06:19:32 AM »
When ever i turn the steering wheel to its maximum radious ill hear a strange high pitch noise that sounds like metal rubbing againts metal, i've lubes up all the parts and still find this happening to me. I know i have a weak idle arm in the steering links, is this the root cause or am i missing a lube point?

Is the sound coming from the power steering pump? If so, check the fluid level at the point it's making the sound. It maybe just low on fluid, and/or starting to fail on you. I've heared pumps make some pretty strange sounds.
If not the pump, I'd have someone turn the seering wheel while I stood outside the truck and tracked down the noise...and yep, I've been known to lay under a vehicle to find a noise. Don't forget to safety block the wheels! :shocking:
Oh, check any and all idler pulleys for noisey bearings.

If it is an IFS truck it could also be the steering stops making noise. I can't tell from your description

It sounds to me like it could be the power steering pump. Most PS pumps tend to make a little noise when turned to their max, mine does.I don't think there's anything wrong with yours, unless it's making an extremely loud noise,or if it's affecting your steering. If it seems to get harder or slower when making your full turn, you could just be low on fluid, but they all seem to make some sort of noise.Even my f-150 does, and It's a 2003.

Like prism said, your steering bump stops are probably worn through. Look at your front brake backing plates from the front of your runner. The bump stops are plastic dome nuts that are right behind the loovers(sp?) on the backing plate. When they wear through to metal they make an awful noise.

This could be a normal internal noise from the power steering pump when the wheels are pegged and the box has bottomed out.

When this happens, instead of blowing the high pressure hose, the spinning rotor housing which containes the veins, will push against a large coil spring and the excess pressure will vent around the rotor housing.

This is the cause of the internal high pitch sound.
