All of the aftermarket (fel-Pro) etc gaskets I've gotten don't have that heat shield on them. I didn't even have the stocker on my truck when I bought it from the PO. Right now I've just got the wires zip-tied together and then to the heater hose. Shouldn't be any real problem not having the heat shield, I would think that the plug wires can handle the heat as long as they're not actually resting on the exhaust manifold.

Not that it should make any difference, but mine have been the advance auto's and for an '83 22r with smog blocked ...I don't recall anyone of us that worked on my truck ever ripping it off much less there being one in the kit.

But the gaskets that came with my thorley were separate for each pair of cylinders and didn't have the shield, but either way with or without it you should be fine.

the new header should come with a gasket.  Or get tin snips and remove the shield.

yup! The only read difference between the 22r and 20r (besides chamber design) was the intake ports

That would explain why it didn't have it.

you may want to swap out the stock exhaust studs for some 5/16'? size with course thread going into the head and fine thread for the header nuts.  Search pirate, someone has a write up on what size studs.  They are so much more beefier than the stock junk which strips out.
Don't make fun of my tiny driveshaft!!!
