I have had a CB installed in previous rigs, but I have not put one in the 4Runner yet because I can't find a place/way to  mount the antenna that is acceptable.  I always wheel with someone else so it minimizes the need for emergency calls.

What kind of a mount are you going to use?  I have the short firestik (I think it's 3 feet) and I mounted it to a hole I drilled in my rear bumper, but I think your mounting point would be better, it's much higher.

CanTheWhales

I have one in my truck, but it doesn't have the power wired up yet...(long story).

Now, I've got a few questions about linears...I know they help you transmit farther, but do they help you receive farther too? And can you mess up somebody's radio if you have one and they don't?

Also, non-linear, can a badly set-up system mess up yours if you talk to them?

TIMS89CRAWLER

most good linears have a receive as well as a transmit setting... the receive does not have as much power as transmit but it still works nice.... and yes you can burn up someones radio if your really close with a high powered linear.....very nice to have though

Ok whales I'll go through the questions for you..
Yes some have a recieve boost on them but all it does most times is increase the noise as well.

No talking to a guy with a radio that has a bad match or something wrong with it will not hurt your radio. You will hurt your radio only if it is setup wrong...

so there are your answers to the questions. Now for a point if you hook a linear up to your CB that's ILLEGAL. Maybe you would like to think about that..also not talking about doing Illegal things on the board is one of the rules.

mounting CB anntenas?
theres a Tip...
Mount the dang thing on the LEFT Side or your rig
it will help with hittin things like tress and what nots that hang over the rode.

Note: i might have been driving to close to the side...OH WELL i guess you learn..

best position is in the center of a truck with a nice ground, these will boost your signal the best. i need to move mine from the DD to crawler soon. is there really a hight limit on anntennas on the trail?

Why would they make linears if it is illegal to hook them up???

Up here in oregon and washington its a good idea to have to listen to log trucks. Ive had very close calls but because I was listening, I got out of the way. One time, it was prob 5 secs after I heard a truck say they were coming down the road with logs.

not state rules but Toyota Landcruiser assoc rules.  also a leading rule set by most off road parks.

its a logging rule that when the rigs leave the highway they call out that they are "coming in the woods" and when they leave the loading area the call out they are "coming out"  this makes sure the trucks dont hit head on, and the "rule" is that loaded trucks have the right of way so if your on a gravel road and a empty log truck bails into the ditch you better follow him.

Ok, well I was just saying a very important safety reason for them too. Those trucks dont stop on a dime

They make them for HAM radio and things like that.  Just boosting your CB over 4 Watts is ILLEGAL. That's 4 watts at the antenna, I will not even get into Plate voltages, Peak Power, Peak Envelope Power, RMS, ETC.
