OH! there it is!

Pinion teeth are rounded off

bent adjuster lock

a little housing scrub

Looks like I penetrated the plate well but not the gears  :_oops:

and

the ride home:

Duffil

looks to me like my gears are done.  Pinion is rounded and has some scratches in it, ring gear has a couple really light grooves...time to build my V6??

86bobbedtoy

wow Duffil, that sucks about the welded rearend.

future reference if your welding a rearend you want to glob as much weld on those teeth and plate as possible so there's absolutely no way it could ever move and/or break loose.

I know...but I was trying not to warp it.  I have a tendency to underdo things, and wasn't expecting it to last more than 1 or 2 runs...just not on the highway. I would have been more comfortable with an ARC machine on that anyhow.

Shamb

yea, you can get deep hot beads in there but you have to do it in moderation so the metal gets a chance to cool, because if you just start blasting it with hot metal it'll definently warp and turn into garbage.

As it sits now, i'm thinking about getting a detroit, bearings and some V6 4.88s and building my V6 diff up.. .spendy, but I shouldn't have to worry about it ever again.

Shamb

 :yesnod:

I contemplated welding my rearend when I did my build.. and after stewing over it for awhile I figured it would be best to just go with a detroit... they're nearly indestructable and I want peace of mind while i'm on the trail.

In your second to last picture it looks like your dif is bleeding from the cut you made

The work looks good on the rear axle. Keep the pictures comming. What thickness plate are you going to use the plate it with ?

Thanks bro..I'm thinkin either 3/16s or 1/4.  It depends on what I can get; If I get a big enough piece I might wrap it up for some armor.  Not sure yet.

snowshoebrue

i got some 1/4" plate, but you have to do mine too

I'm not afraid.  I can spread JB Weld with the best of em!

Which axle you wanna shave?

snowshoebrue

the tacoma housing.  i do have some plate if you need it though.  i have a couple 18x24 pieces of 1/4.  along the outside they have 4 holes on each side.  they were used to hold bolt pattern for steel collums during a pour.

holy good god those are big.  If you want me to shave it, I'll do it fer ya.  Do you know how much room is in there with the bridges on the carrier caps?  I've never been inside one.  Not sure how much there is to gain.  But I will do it.

snowshoebrue

not a clue on the clearances.  i am using my rear 5.29 third in it.  i have to add more studs and do something with the e-locker notch.  i need it for the width otherwise i would have to have 3" wheel spacers on an ifs housing to match the front.  i wasn't extremely worried about shaving it i just have to ditch the fill plug.  it hangs down really far.  i was going to bring the portaband home from work and just slice it off

Duffil

it's up to you bro, let me know and I'll come get it.

snowshoebrue

oh its fine i will do it.  i am going to put a full length truss on the back also.  i will be more motivated to work on it when the front shows up. its supposed to ship tomorrow. i might be in oakdale to practice for softball tomorrow if you want me to bring one of the plates.  i give you a plate in trade for letting me use a third for my mock up

Duffil

yeah mos def!  Call me if your in town and i'll swing one out.
