How do I make the Cut ?
« on: Sep 19, 2003, 08:06:18 AM »
look, i'm not making up this question just to be funny,,

I'm planning to do some body work 'cuts' on my 92 toy fender wheels

short of borrowing my wife's Garden Shear scissor,,

and short of using a Blow torch.

What is a good tool that can do a decent (not perfect) cut ? on a wheel well ?

given, i have never done any vehicular body work ever, so i figure I get me a 'dremel' kit or one of those circular tool,,,

but better yet,, maybe ask around first and get advise ..

thaks in advaance you all !

Do you have an air compressor? If so, I'd have to recommend one of my personal favorites-the air cut-off wheel.  Lay a strip of masking tape down and then just work slowly around.  Easy-peasy.  How about a sawzall? another one of my personal favorites, I'd practice on some other sheet-metal first though cause it can be easy to chase it all over the place.  Good luck

A cut off wheel on the end of a die grinder is what I use..fast and simple and good cuts ... :flamer:

I would recomend a 4"angle grinder from harborfreight tools with the thin cut off wheels. They go on sale for around 15 bones. Mask the cut as GFerris suggested.   Avoid sawsall cuts as they are prone to stretching the metal around the cut as they reciprocate, leaving a deformed edge on the fender.

hands down.. air saw...

if you use one you will never use anything else - including a cut off wheel!  Plus they are like $20 at HF, WELL WORTH IT!!

In My Own Opinion/Experience (naturally):
Air saws are an improvement over a sawzall but they still want to distort the edge.

but distorting the edge only matters if you care about distorting edge...I think we can all agree on that.

Or if you live near a highschool or college with a welding program, just go down there and talk to an instructor and tell them what you need done usually they will get the students on it, or just let you use their tools...

I use a body saw for all sheet metal work. Most HFs have then there and the blades are cheap too.  My all time fav is the PLASMA fast and effective or you can do it the old way of just letting it self clearance just kidding BODY SAW is the cheapest way to go and with practice you can do it with minimal warpage.

I use an airsaw to cut holes in doors of older trucks to install speakers all the time. Its very fast, clean and accurate. In my opinion its the best for a painted body panel.
