What gear oil should I use for new G52/G54 tranny?
« on: Feb 14, 2006, 08:34:12 AM »
I got my new Marlin G52/G54 tranny for the 84 4x4 and I need to know what gear oil will be best to use?

Also, how much do I need to buy?

Thanks

Thanks for the info.

Between the time that I ordered the tranny and received the tranny I ruptured a disc in my back so I think I have my son pull the tranny out of the box to see if Marlin wrote anything on it.

Any of you guys ever run synthetic in these trannies?

yes 80-90 get a name brand oil,  like valvoline or pennsoil

DO NOT USE WALMART OIL for anything,

If cash isn't an issue, break them in on dino and then switch to synthetic.  I think that Redline MT is the best possible oil for the transmission, but I'm not sure it matters for the transfer case.  I have heard that the Redline MT relieves the cold shift symptoms in the tranny and works well with the syncros.  Sadly, I'm not sure my tranny wouldn't spring leaks with synthetic so I have not personally tried it.

I can't speak for their tranny lube, but I've run redline engine oil for years and it's a very good oil, and synthetic definately does flow better cold than dino, so it should help with cold shifting.  Bend over when you set the case on the checkout counter though, they're gonna stick it to you!

i JUST SWAPED OUT THE TRANNY IN MY 89     USED 75-90 BLEND    WORKS GREAT  NO SHIFTING PROBLEMS WHEN COLD EITHER   AND IT'S CHEAPER THAN FULL SYNTHETIC     IT'S REALLY THIN   DON'T BE SUPRISED

i was told by several sources that using gl4 is best in the tranny becasue that is what they were designed on. and that gl5 is actually too good and causes slipping of the synchros

i use sta-lube gl4 from napa
