Rear Shock Mounting
« on: Jan 31, 2006, 11:40:50 PM »
well yet again, another question. since i couldnt really find a clear picture of this ill ask you guys for reference.

since i just ordered my rear u-bolt flip kit..... i need to find a way to mount my shocks. im debating between the conventional  method like shown below just mounted to the axle instead or the ever seemingly popular center up shocks shown next to mine. does anyone have diffrent mounting styles? ill need to keep my bed space so through the bed is out of the question. im just not sure wich route to go :dunno: can you guys post up pictures of how you have yours mounted?

I used Sky's kit.  It's similar to the "center up" pic you posted.

http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/

Not the best pic, but its the only one I have of the rear shocks.

yea, i was looking at that when i ordered my relocation plates from them. i may be able to do that myself since i have access to a tube bender and welder.wouldnt take much just a couple of welds and some base plates. hell i could make it adjustable if i wanted. thanks for the picture gturismo........ by the way, what set up is that you have as far as lift and shock length?

aww crap.
I put my shocks mounted on top of the axle, and then canged ua mount onthe bed. has gobs of flex and travel. I used the 42.5 inch extended racerunners. they have a 16 inch stroke.so your flex on the rear is really cool.

thats highly impressive! though it defeats the purpose of me having a truck.  ::)     i still need to have the use of a truck so my choices on what i do to it to improve trail capability have to be well balanced between tasks.

I'm using 4" springs, 6" shackles and a 2" lift block for leveling.  Shocks are Rancho 9000s with 12" travel. The total amount of rear lift was supposed to be 7.5" but after it settled it was less, of course.  I think I ended up with around 6 to 6.5" of lift.

Gtourismo, thats a very clean, neat looking 4runner you have by the looks of your avatar. i think i may have sagged the suspension out a little bit as well. im running marlin rear 4" with a 2" shackle, front NWOR 4" springs with a 2" shackle as well. i think its sagged out to be around 5.5" of lift. i also happened to remove the overload leaf from the rears as it rode a little harsh without any weight in it...... i kinda piad for it as a result when i whent to the desert this past time and had a receiver hitch put in it

yup...... once i got to the desert, come morning that receiver couldnt have flown off any faster off the truck  im not running it anymore given theres no real need for it. actual reason i put it on there is cus my freind usually loads a trailer for the desert and we just take my truck to haul all our crap instead of use 2 vehicles and share the gas bill. that and to add some weight in the rear to make it ride somewhat better. oh well, i guess we dont use a trailer on my truck till i get marlins rear bumper instead.

mounting your shocks at an angle, is a bad idea unless the shocks are specifically valved for that angle. they need to be mounted vertically to fully use the damping ablities of the shock.

But I have seen the cages lower on the surface of the bed. if you want the extra flex its worth it.

trust me....... when i pack for the desert... i pack! :bricks: although i have thought about placing a higher crossmember and mount them there instead, similar to the sky manufacturing shock mount. just run it to the floor hight of the bed and mount em up there. but, it will be something to consider in the future. for now, my truck does all i want it to do just well. :driving:
