HELP!! Newb to CV's
« on: Jan 06, 2006, 02:07:00 PM »
Ok guys, I'm tryin to change my Half Shaft on the Amigo.  I'm workin on the Pass side right now.  I got the hub pulled and that side of the half shaft loose... now I can't seem to get the diff side loose.  I removed the 4 bolts on the plate that goes against the diff (was advised by a friend), and now I seem to be missin something   ???  :help:

Thanks

If its anything at all like the toy CVs, wedge something between the plate and the diff, and hit it with a BFH.  Or you could open the diff, and tap the end of the axle from the inside with a big screwdriver and a hammer, it'll come right out that way as well.  You may wanna try rebolting up those bolts, and just pulling hard on it, it may pop loose.  :dunno:  I'll be doing this tommorow, so mabye then I'll have some better suggestions

Thanks BD, but there is more than just the 4 bolts on the plate, and takin those off I don't think is happening.  :dunno: I tried bangin on the plate with a wrench, didn't make a difference :headscratch:

Ya gotta wedge something between the plate and the diff and bang on it (screwdriver, wrnch handle, piece of pipe)  ya don't bang on the plate itself silly :slap:

ok, I'm going to try this.  This is essentially what a 'yoat CV looks like ---0---0---  the 0's are the "joints" covered by the boots.  The two end pieces go into the hub and into the diff.  There are bolts holding the two axle "plates" onto the mid section of the CV.  you really don't need to disconnect those bolts to get them out.

hub side is loose ---0---0--- diff side is not.
^ plate is here, from here to the right is in the diff.  Wedge something here, and then use it to pry the plate away from the diff.  that should work, I've done it on my half shafts a lot.  If you don't get it by tommorow, I'll take photos as I do it and post them up for you.  It should all come out as one piece. if you do it right.

 In order to take the diff cover off I have to pull the xmember, (just did that), then I have to pull the d-line, then pull it off, kinda like a 3rd :headscratch:

Ok, looks like there is a snap ring on the end of the inside birf that holds it into the side gear. You need a large pry bar between the birf and the diff. A quick pop should release it from the diff.

There is no need to open the diff.

I"ve been tryin to do that all day.  The metal plate between the diff and the axle is unbolted and I've been pryin it like crazy :smack:

Yeah.... tried that :smack: Maybe I'm just not strong enough... or maybe missin a bolt somewhere :dunno: :headscratch: :dunno: I looked at the plate and it seems there may be another bolt on the top... not of the vertical face but the horizontal curve of the plate on the top :smack: I don't know... I can't tell if the bolt actually goes through the plate or if the plate goes around the bolt :smack:

I think the plate you are talking about is part of the diff that holds the carrier bearings in. put the bolts back in and pry between the plate and the birf. You will need good leverage and a good quick bump on the pry bar. the longer the better on the pry bar.

if you can get two bars in there one on either side may help.

Pretend the flange here is the inner birf. Nissan uses flanges, but yours is just like it without the flange.

What about the inner c-clamps.  Aren't there c clamps inside the diff? :headscratch: I know there are grooves for em on the new axle I got :dunno: So I figure there are c-clamps inside that I may need to release?? :dunno:

No, that is for a snap ring. It catches a groove in the side gear to hold them in. You may need to reuse the ones on the old axles or get new ones. Depends how they look after you finaly get them out. I will look for mor pics.

Ok, c-clamp/snap ring, same thing to me. As fer the snap ring... in order to get to it I'd have to open the diff.... right?  :ack:  :hammer: That is what's keepin it from comin out.... from what I can tell.  And when I put my new axle in I have to replace the snap rings... right? Makes sense, but in order to do that I'd assume opening the diff   ???

Thanks again fer all yer help  you guys are the best!

Looks like there may be a bolt inside the inner birf that holds it into the side gear. Or you could have C clips like a GM?

Looking for more info.

Well, it's got a GM block, so I'd assume it'd have more GM trademarks :ack:

Can you take a pic of the end of the new shaft? I want to see if there is a hole in the middle for a bolt or how the  groove looks?

There is an inner c-clip...you have to remove the third member to get at it.  Sorry  :(
