cruiser thirds in '81 hilux diffs?
« on: Dec 18, 2005, 11:13:07 AM »
Sorry if this question seems stupid, but I'm new to the Toyota scene...
Anyway, I was talking w/ a co worker the other day about gears, and he said he has a set of FJ40 diffs he may be willing to part with.
They have 4.37 gears (he thinks) but he is unsure what vintage they are. I know the rear diff has an off set pumpkin, but would the third members work in my '81 4x4's housings? I was told the are desirable and high pinion, but I haven't seen them yet, and really don't know any better.

I think you might be able to make them fit :headscratch:

Are you being sarcastic? I honestly don't know, this is my first non-fullsize buildup...

I've heard that they can fit but I don't know first hand.

Don't waste your time using the fj thirds, it's not even worth trying to make fit, not to mention that they're probably just plain too big.  You'd be better off trying to buy them from him really cheap and resell them to somebody with an fj for a profit, then take that money and use it to get the gears you want.  I'd be very skeptical about them having 4.37s too, there aren't too many different ratios made for those and I didn't think that was one of them.  If I remember right the bearings are weaker than the ones in your 8" too.

yea  Nate's right,  the pickup diffs are stronger than the fj40 diffs,   they had problems with the pinion gear   and they are WAY bigger than the 8 inch pickup

now if you can find the landcruiser fj80 front  diff  , these are the highpinion design,  also called reverse cut,    basically  it has the pinion above the centerline of the axle instead of below like 90% of all drive axles

I might pass on them then, I was just hoping to get lower gears at a great price, Freenintyfree.
I'm in north fork, approx. 50 miles north of Fresno. I actually applied for a position at Marlin a few months ago, and was hired, but my currennt employer offered me a great raise to stay, so I did.
So, anyone out there in cyberworld have a set of 4.37, or 4.88 thirds they wanna let go cheap? Didn't think so.

don't waste your time on the 4.375s.  they're weak, i had one blow up for no reason driving down the street.  better off with 4.56s if you don't want to go with 4.88s or 5.29s.

Ha!!!  And you guys all called me crazy when I started a thread about 4.37s being weak some time ago.  I had a broken one in my 80 when I bought it, switched it out with one from my parts truck and broke it too, broke off 10 teeth and still was able to drive home despite leaking out all my oil through the  hole it made in my rear end.  Dunno why, but the pinion gear seems to be the weak link.

a fj 4o third will not fit into a mini axle, and prolly does not have 437s, but 410s, and if its a high pinion, then it isnt a 40 but an 80, in wich case it will fit in a mini axle, i have this set upo right now and it is awesome

fj40 diff = 8.875" ring gear
mini diff = 8" ring gear
