yep. thanks to some good friends, they picked my tires/wheels and got everything straightened out and welded up while im still waiting out here in TN to go home.

I never really posted up any upgrades to the truck. I was too busy upgrading it when I flew back home for such a short time last month. I finally bead locked my wheels, bought some longfield UHMW spindle bushings. I picked up those bronze kingpin bushings which actually gave me some trouble. I ended up not being able to use one on the driver side knuckle. Ill post more about that in a minute. I got some solid drive flanges and I replaced every bearing/seal in my front end as well. Everything was completely blown out. Anyways heres a few pictures.

Once I had everything put all back together and was about to put the tires back on, I did a shake down of the steering with my hands to make sure everything was tight. The tie rod had the usual small movement and twist with the heims but there was a clunking going on some where. I chased it up the draglink to the pitman arm and got a huge scare. The bolt I welded into my arm was broken. Im so glad I caught it the day before we left. That would have been a huge failure on the trail and a expensive trip to fly across country, go through the whole truck and have the draglink fall on the ground the first 10 minutes after unloading it of the trailer. I redrilled the arm and threw in a grade 8 (3/4") bolt and welded the head to the arm. Theres a lot of stress on that bolt. The sector shaft looked good when I pulled the arm.






The problem with the bronze kingpin bushings were that it would not seat around the kingpin correctly because the roll pin included with the bushings were too big. C&M Performance supplied 1/4" roll pins. If you look at the factory plastic pucks, they have the smallest donger coming off them that just barely keeps the bushing from spinning around the kingpin. I went with a 1" long 5/32 roll pin that I cut in half. The pin was small enough to fall into the knuckle but big enough to where it wouldnt get in between the knuckle and bronze bushing and cause a bind in there when steered. It instantly solved the problem. The knuckle and high steer arm seated much better and I was finally able to get a preload. Before the knuckle wouldnt even move. As for the driver side, I could never get the bronze bushing to work. I was running short on time and just threw my in good shape plastic bushing back in there. The bronze bushings are from C&M performance. I still need to get a hold of them and tell them whats going on. All the lower kingpin bearings were replaced and the races were seated good and solid. I couldnt figure out why the knuckle would tighten up so hard it couldnt hardly be moved, with 2 people trying to steer it. To the eye the factory and bushing and bronze ones looked the same. I wish I would have mic'd them.

There actually trail-gears (only part on my whole truck). I was ready to order yours up years ago and those fell in my lap at a dirt cheap price brand new in the box. Your tranny adapter, crawl box adapter and 23 spline front input has been through numerous rear case failures and every time everything has been apart, they all look in good condition.

While were on topic with that, on your tranny adapter (3.0), if your under the motor facing the tranny and cases, the bottom left bolt was never able to fit in the tranny. If I remember correctly. There just wasnt enough room for it. Was that common or a problem years ago??? I think I bought this off you guys 6 years ago???

its the bottom left bolt hole. It was like the tranny was in the way of it or something weird. Ill check again this weekend.

ok so heres my question, whats up with my tranny adapter. I bought it years and years ago. I was never able to get this bolt in. Why I never returned it or asked question then, I cant tell you. (probably cause I was in a rush to go wheeling). There still has never been a single problem or failure with the adapter and crawl box or gears. But anyways the bolt on the right at the bottom has been coming loose every trip now. On the left it may be hard to see but I even grinded the tranny housing away to get a bolt to fit in years ago when I installed it and it still wouldnt fit. I should throw a stud/nut in there. Im just wondering if it was machined wrong? has anyone every seen this before?

Isnt there supposed to be a counter sunk allan head bolt in that spot?

Edit:nvm i have an inchwormgear adaptor and it is the same.

Sorry for the late reply kiyul4130. Also, my bad, I thought you had broken some gears and had upgraded to ours. I've got ya confused with someone else-

Regarding the missing bolt, that is our early design plate. Dingman. is right, all new plates have a tapered hole for a counter sunk torx bolt (used to be Allen), but you can see from the pics that kiyul4130's plate is not counter sunk. For this, we used to use what we called a "D Bolt", that would clear the transmission tail housing after minor grinding. Please take a look at our Online Installer: http://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/guide/v6-adapter-plate-instructions

The D-Bolt and required grinding is shown at the bottom left of the image on the installer and mirrored below.

The bolt is an ordinary 10x1.25mm metric bolt but it has a unique feature of a 12mm head (as apposed to the larger neighboring 14mm bolt heads). The application for this unique bolt is from the rear drive line flange of a Dodge D50 pickup, but this model Dodge Ram was only offered from 1979 to 1980 and as a result Chrysler has long since discontinued the bolt making these hard to find.

My advice would be to use a 10x1.25mm cap or button bolt with an Allen or Torx head, which would require less grinding.

If all else fails, we still have a few of these D-Bolts here, so if you need to order anything from us, let me know and I'll toss the bolt in the package free of charge :thumbs:



Note: The counter sunk bolt design that we've been selling for about the past 4 years no longer requires this grinding.

Thanks BigMike. I think I may look for that 10x1.25mm with the torq head. I could see that possibly fitting with just a tiny bit more grinding. Interesting fact about the D50 bolt. My friend built one of those diesel trucks into a crawler on 47s several years back. I may see if he does have something laying around still. I really need to upgrade my front output with your guys 30 spline.

Got a smallish checklist before the round-up. Im pretty excited to go to the rubicon. Its going to be my first time this year. I think because little sluice was filled in, I just havent been that excited to get back up there.
This should pretty much setup my truck for all of next year which will be nice not having to upgrade/mod it.
To Do List:
New bed for the truck.
Bed Bob
Longfield 300M output. (currently have the chromo one)
Marlin 30 spline front output
New rear shocks
spring hangers
real working rock lights on a switch
music if I'm lucky.......
Replace the destroyed wheel with the new wheel and beadlock ring I have.

Its in the garage, I got the tcase apart (imagine that). I just needed some detent balls and a couple snap rings. Nothing is broken though. There was problems with it staying in 4wd or even shifting into 4wd. That will all be fixed. No hammers for me this year. Or at least KOH for that matter.
