Firefighter testing in WY
« on: Aug 23, 2005, 02:48:41 PM »
Well, I tested for firefighter in Tacoma, WA and Casper, WY last week.  dont know anything about tacoma yet, but I made it through 3 phases of Casper's testing. I am waiting on the 3rd phases scores to see if I continue on.

I got a 94% on the written test, passed the pyhsical test (firefighter challenge) in 5:14 with a mandatory time of 7:00, Passed ther aerial ladder climb (105 feet at a 75* angle, roughly 95 feet) and went through an oral interview.

Here are some pictures of Casper and the surrounding area, as well as some from the testing

All I can say is test, test, test!! The more you do it, the better you'll get. Practice that oral too. Have answers ready for the common questions. (why do you want this job, why should we hire you over everyone else, give an example of one of your good traights, and even harder, give an example of a bad traight (if you can take a bad traight and turn it good it's kinda like bonus points))
Confidance without being cocky and sell yourself like a sleeper on a corner.
Oh ya, I found in this day and age starting an answer about work with something like "after ensuring the scene was safe for my crew and myself" etc. Management loves safety.

Dang that was close though, I bet if you were to test again and with Fireballs expertise you would pass no problem.

Practice makes perfect... (in some cases practice makes babies, but that's not the topic at hand)

Keep your chin up, and go to every interview/test you can. Occasionally, I'll go to an interview for a job I have no intention of taking, just to keep the skills up so that when a job comes along that I really want, I'm on my game and don't have to worry about that part of the process. Remember, and interview is your opportunity to interview them as well. Try to come up with some pointed questions about their operation, and if you have time to research their organization beforehand, incorporate some of those facts into your questions. (For example: "I see that you run 3000 calls per month, what percentage of those are med-aid versus fire response"... or "what kind of mass casualty (disaster, biological attack, plane crash etc) programs do you have in place?") Another thing that helps is saying things like " I plan on moving up the organizational ladder as quickly as possible. (My goal is to be a fire captain in 4-5 years) What ways do you have training in order to accomplish this?

it also helps to go to some of those online job mills. They often have "what are employers looking for" type sections. Just make sure you use your reagular speach pattern, so that it doesn't sound like your regurgitating something from jobs.com. They'll see right thru it and you'll look foolish.

Just my :2cents:
