Cool, thanks for the offer.  I'm in Pueblo, 2 hours south of you.  I noticed your signature, your 4Runner sounds like where I want mine to be!  Do you have any pics of your exo cage?  My brother has a bender and I want to start designing an exo for mine.  Do you visit colorado4x4.org?  I'm on here quite a bit as well as colorado4x4.  We'll have to get together and go wheeling sometime  :beerchug:

Valve spring removal.  The clamp presses the valve spring in just enough to remove the valve keeper.  One end presses on the top of the valve and the other presses on the spring.

Backside of tool.  Notice how dirty the head is in these pictures.

Spring compressed and keeper removed.

Intake valves and valve springs.  They just need cleaned up and they are good to go.  With 140K on them, they looked great.

Close-up of valve.  It's got some build up on it but should clean up nicely.

Rock head gasket.  I was afraid it was a fel-pro gasket.  I've heard quite a few people having trouble with the fel-pro head gaskets on the 22RE's.

Here's the head after being drown in solvent for 24 hours  :D  I'm still working on getting the intake gasket off of the head.  It's stuck on there good.

Backside of head and the gasket remover snot, trying to get that gasket off.

Hopefully I can get the head glass-beaded this weekend to get it cleaned up as good as new.

I worked on cleaning up the head and valves today.  I took them to my granddad's shop.  He's got a glass beading machine.  I glass beaded all eight valves and started on the head.  I didn't get any pics of the valves but boy do they clean up nice after getting hit with some glass  :D

The intake valves look great but the exhaust valves had some pitting around the area where they seal to the head.  I plan on running all the valves through a valve grinder (he's got one of those as well.  This man has every tool ever made.  :D )  I started on the head but ran outta time.  I still have about 1-2 more hours of beading to get it fully cleaned.  Here's some pics from today

In the glass beading machine

Looking better, it's amazing how clean you can get parts by glass beading them

I'm making some progress, very slowly but it's moving forward.  Do you visit the cottora/ttora boards offen?  I don't ever check them out, I've got too many other boards I'm checking out and my wife would kill me if I added a couple more  :rofl2:

looks just like the engine rebuild that  I just went through on my 87, I just hope yours doesn't hit the crapper before you go only 75 miles

Oh and don't give up its all worth it when your done.

The work looks good so far, and that cruise control is not factory, and the controls are not where Toyota has them either.

God, I hope not.  This is my first engine buildup but my dad and uncle are helping me.  They both have some experence so that always helps.  I think once I can get both 4Runner's in one garage side by side and get everything I need from the 85 swapped into the 84 and everything out of the 84 and into the 85, the project will start taking some shape.

I worked on it again last night and got the head almost clean.  The intake and exhaust ports are the toughest to get totally clean.

Then we stepped over to the valve grinder.  My uncle showed me how the grinder works and we grinded one exhaust valve and got the surface clean and free of pits.  That's all I had time for last night

I also ordered a new cam and head bolts last night from engnbldr.com

I worked on the head and valves again last night with my uncle. I took the head to the car wash and attempted to get all the glass beads out of it as well as the glass dust. Totally got wet in the process trying to spray out all the little water jackets and ports

We wanted to see if the head was warped so we decieded to Plasticgage the top of the camshaft. I've never done that before. Everything measured out fine. One thing that my uncle noticed was 7 out of the 8 valve guides had worked there way out. They were not seated against the little clip. So we are going to have to put it in the oven at @ 200 degrees and pound the valve guides down.

I also got the other 7 valves grinded and cleaned up.

I got my package from engnbldr with my new camshaft and head bolts!

OK, it's now an offical buildup!  I finally got one of the 4Runner's in an actual garage and actually turned a wrench on it!

Sautrday
We decided to work on the 84.  We took the tranny and t-case out of it.  We also unhooked and labeled the connectors, hoses, and vacuum lines.

End of the day shot

G-52 tranny and forward shift t-case

Everything is marked and unhooked.  We fought with one stupid wiring harness connector for at least 30 minutes.  We never got it unhooked until Sunday with a pair of wire cutters

Sunday 3-12-06

Motor pulling time!  We cut one wiring harness connector (I'll have to now have 4 little connectors rather than one) and 4 motor mount bolts.

Motor unhooked and being lifted.  We found out later that the hoist wasn't tall enough and I had to take the front tire off, and lower the jack down to get the engine out.

looks like it is coming along well just remeber the more time you spend on the details now the better it will look later, spit shine the angine bay while every thing is out reloom the wires nicly useing wire loom not electrical tape (tacky) take your time on it when you get the time make some neet little battery tray that will actually hold the batt/ in place none of my factory toy batt. trays could hold a batt. in place for me

I worked on it again Saturday.  My dad and I went out and picked up the 85 from a friend's house.  We unloaded it and I degreased the engine compartment.

I then moved the 84 out of the garage and degreased the engine bay as well.  I scrubed the firewall and inner fenders as well as the frame rails.  I forgot to take the camera so no pics.

We then took the entire dash apart and starting looking how we were going to get the wiring harness out.  Taking a dash apart is a PIA.  We started to take the harness out of the engine bay and into the truck.

We also dropped the gas tank to swap with the 85.

More to come.

The head has been milled 20 thousands.  Looks good.  I'm debating on having the block milled to get some quench back.

Here's some tech about quench from 4x4wire.com written by EB (http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB89&Number=820891&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=365&fpart=1)
"Quench is the close collision of the piston head to the flat part of the combustion chamber.  We want it to be zero deck, or as close to that as we can get. Stock, the piston does protrude by about .006" or so, if yours does, this is fine.

The goal here is to get them all to as close to the same as possible and up where they belong.

If this measurement shows the piston is down from the top of the deck at TDC, you will need to disassemble and correct this by having the block decked. Tight quench means you can run proper ignition timing without pinging. A sloppy quench will create more pinging at less timing that the tighter compression ratio will, the blast effect of the close collision atomizes the mixture and distributes it better across the chamber."

I don't remember what quench I'm at but all 4 pistions are way down in the block.  No good for performance.

We moved the 84 on the side of the house and moved the 85 into the garage.  I probably won't get to work on anything for two weeks.  My little girl is turning one in a week!

My dad and I worked on the 4Runner again on Saturday.  We ended up getting quite a bit done.  We took the 85 (parts truck) and started marking and removing all the vaccuum lines, hoses, and engine wiring harness.  I have never worked on an engine that greasy and oily.  I have to wipe down the harness to get all the oil off of it.

We also removed the intake manifold and talk about nasty as well.  There is a coating of oil inside the manifold from all the blow-by and the EGR pumping nasty exhaust into the intake.  I'll have to take them to get hot-tanked, that's the only way they are going to come clean.

We also removed the tranny and t-case and got most of the dash taken off to gain access to the wiring harness.  The engine is close to being out as well.

Next steps is to get the 22RE onto an engine stand and start removing everything I will need to build up my shortblock on the other engine stand.  I have a ton of cleaning before that is going to happen however

If you are going to to clean that intake up, don't use a hot tank.  I does funny stuff to the finish of that cast aluminum.  I tried it on mine and it looked like crap afterward.  If I had it to do again, I would use carb dip.  Of coarse, you would have to strip everything off of it or the plasic and rubber would be trashed.

-Just a heads up.....

Thanks for the heads up.  I don't know much when it comes to building engines.  I will call around and ask if they have carb dip.  It's OK to hot tank the oil pan, right?

Saturday 7/8 :
I spent all day working on the intake manifold, valve cover and rocker assembly. I have gone through 2 gallons of the Castrol purple degresser and two trips to the car wash (got soaked in the process Very Happy ) Took apart the rocker assembly and scrubed on each of the rocker arms and rocker rods.

Sunday 7/9:
Finished up rocker arms. Worked on the 85 and removed the fuel line (PITA) fuel tank wiring, and fuel tank. Then we took the 84 fuel line out and bolted it to the 85 as well as the carb tank. We worked on the wiring harness. There are serveral wires with connectors that weren't used, wires with no connectors, and wires that have been cut all the way to the wire.

Oh yea, the wiring harness is one big grease ball so we (my dad and I) were cleaning it wire by wire. We unwraped most of it to repair some damaged wires so we'll clean it and rewrap.
