:headscratch: Where the hell was that fire coming from? Is that why you need to modify the header? It sure sounds like a beast! You are the godfather of 3RZ conversions Mike!
No, look again, there is NO header! No exhaust manifold at all - sweetness! Marlin loves to see those blue flames. :flamer:  Takes him back to his Chevy V8 days :circle: :driving:  :burnout:

No, the Downey Header, in my opinion, has much to be desired. For the price, it can't be beat, but the fit and finish on it sucks big time! Both my header and Marlin's required weld "boogers" to be grinded off from inside the pipes, and the EGR hookup is a nightmare. Not only is the extension piece to long such that the 3RZ EGR pipe must be forced away to fit the header, but to make matters worse, the mating surface is horribly warper and much re-surfacing is required or else that EGR gasket will get blown out in a matter of days.

I'd love to do something like this, but don't have the money. I also need to learn some welding/fabbing skills, my mechanics and wiring is pretty good.

What's the official word form the smog nazis about running an auto computer in a manual truck and vise versa?

Good work Mike. This will no doubt help many peole out in swaps of their own. I'm personally looking forward to reading your wiring notes.

Looks like another super-clean conversion by BigMikeEnterprises   :beerchug:

Switching over to a manual trans ECU will be WAY easier that trying to make that auto ECU work.  Since the trans controller is built into the engine ECU, it'll pretty much always freak out unless there's an automatic tranny plugged in.  Also, the engine ECU retards the timing when it thinks it should be shifting to smooth out the gearshifts, and will run a little wierd with a manual behind it....

Since a manual ECU would be a P-N-P operation, stick it in there.

When do I send my rig out for a fancy 3RZ?  Actually, I'm pondering a 5VZ conversion....

Thanks for the heads-up Ryan, and infact, Marlin has already ordered a manual T100 2WD ECU, they are cheap because they are from a T100 and they are old, he's getting it for just $50-

But as for Dean and Bevin, a 5spd ECU from a 2 year old Taco is gonna be some bucks.

Ok,

Marlin has got a 5spd ecu ($50! for a 1996) and so has Dean ($100!! for a 2004 :o)

As for Marlin's truck, we've got the brakes and clutch hooked up, Marlin's finishing up the radiator and water lines today. Tonight I will finish up the wiring (loom and clean) and hopefully tomorrow it will go to the muffler shop for an exhaust system.

Cutting it close, but it looks like it'll be there! 8)

Hey Mike -

What is the name of the program you are using to access Marlin's engine? Where can I get it and more info?

When can we expect a 3rzfe swap kit from Marlin? :)

And I never heard how this thing did after the swap? How was it at the con and how is it on the road? Hows the mileage and power?

Thanks man.

h0nke,

The program is called "Diagnose" and can be found at http://www.obddiagnostics.com

I know that we have been getting a lot of calls for 3RZ conversion parts (engine mounts/wiring kits/etc) but since we are moving into our new building, working on the 6-stud knuckle, something I'm not supposed to talk about, and the rear disconnect, the R&D development is tied up at the moment. They actually want me to come down and develop these kits, but I don't have the time to do it because I am still a student...

Well, we switched over to a 5spd ECU which cleaned up all of the trouble codes, then Marlin found out that the fuel pump in the wrecking yard EFI tank he was using was junk, so he replaced that, and it's been running strong ever since.

He drove it to the Round-Up, it did great, and he recently drove it all the way to Mesquite, NV (almost 500 miles) and he was able to pull all of the difficult hills in 4th gear flat-footed at 65 MPH!! Even with his 37s and the extra weight of his rig (compared to mine). So that is really amazing, I don't care who you are. His fuel mileage is at about 17 MPH on the highway, which isn't so bad. He can cruise all day at 80 MPH in 5th gear at about 3/4 throttle.  Before he could only do 70 MPH drag-limited (maximum speed) in 4th gear floored with his carburetor. It couldn't even hold 5th gear. He basically had a 4spd before this engine. His carb engine in 5th gear would actually loose speed, and you would have to downshift back to 4th and just leave it there, and yes, this is on flat ground, normal weather.

Here are some new updated pictures, enjoy! 8)
His engine bay is busy because he has a York Air compressor and he kept his battery in the factory location.

Also, I took complete notes on the wiring work that I did, and I need to post those reports here, including complete wire locations, looming, colors, corresponding page numbers in the wiring book, and more. I have not removed the interior fuse box, but I plan to do so after the round up on both my truck and Marlin's, as we both have the same EFI system onboard.

Did this info ever get posted?

Smogged Marlin's truck last week..

Check out that 25 MPH test.. 90.7% below the maximum allowed HC, detected ZERO CO%, and is 98% below the maximum NO parts per million.

Isn't that awesome?? Look how much cleaner these 3RZs are than a carburated 22R!!

His truck makes 18.6 MPG (source: OBD-II scanner) cruising at 70 MPH on the freeway with 37" MTR (beadlocked) and 5.29:1.
