this was probably a better idea back when propane was cheaper than gas

Dr Phat

^ It has more to do with the fact your not dealing with a carb anymore and can take the engine off camber and not worry about stalling it out.

86rustbucket

i'd rather have EFI,   and if i flip my truck on its lid i dont give a :pokinit: if the engine stalls or not.

Dr Phat

Well converting the truck to propane than to EFI is alot cheaper.

And cant flip your truck on its lid if its always stalling out. Hehe.

Dr Phat

Have fun! Its fairly simply and an awesome mod.

83 Crawler

about 3 of my friends have it so iv learned alot about it so it should be nice

Lostrunner

how many miles do you get on a 10g tank?

gray

I get 120 miles with hubs locked running in two wheel drive in a mix of snow and street driving!
86 pick up 39's ,propane ,5:29's longs ,Detroit 's duel cases w/4:70 in rear case, twin stick, ceramic clutch ,rear disk brake convertion, cut and rotated front axle, inboard rear springs, exo cage, flat bed

Yesterday I called Carry to order his 22r kit, and he spent exactly 1 hour on the phone with me describing the conversion in great detail.  He puts every mixer he sells on a test truck and dials in the settings via a wide band oxygen sensor/computer dyno thing.  Sorry, it started to get a little above my head.  Basically, the reason his kit works so well is because he truly is a pro at this, and knows exactly how it all should be set up.  Can't wait to own the emissions here in CO and have a better running truck!

I am currently in the process of switching mine over. What block off plates are you running? EGR, fuel pump, air rail on headers? 02 sensor? If you tap into the heater coolant line like Kyota did, wont it only flow through the regulator if the heater is on?

Any more pictures of your motors would be great! All sides please!

For an EGR block of plate I had a friend (although I could have probably done it myself) take the EGR piping itself, cut it, then plugged them up with some welds and it works fine.

IIRC, the kit comes with a fuel pump block off plate.

I have a 22R so no help on 02 sensor or related sensors.

Sweet. Thank you.

I also have an 82 22r with an O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe right after the header.

That's not a normal O2 sensor, it's called something else.  You can just forget about it.

Yes, it's on my DD.  I do have a fill station right round the corner from my house which is open 7 days, and I never really drive too far from home, so for me it's great.  $2.69 a gallon right now.

how is your mpg? range? any pwr increase? im think of 20r/22r hybrid

OldGold3VZE

I get about 15 miles per gallon, so I don't think it's too bad.  Engine is a re-built 1984 22r with 22r head, MSD ignition and coil, new NGK plugs and wires, 2.5" exhaust with very large muffler, .040" pistons, and a 261 crawler cam.  The truck rips.  Weighs 3700 pounds if that helps.

thats not bad i think my stock gets about 18 or so. gotpropane.com got me thinking about it there saying there product is made for this purpose alone. just wondering if anyone can back them up on it. i know imco sells a kit for cheaper but sometime you get what you pay for:(

OldGold3VZE

Impco manufactures the parts for propane engine conversions, but they don't sell a properly tuned kit for our trucks.  Maybe forklifts.  Carey at gotpropane also told me that he builds his kits using the highest grade impco silicone internals, but generic casings because the impco casings are known to crack.  There are countless reasons to buy from him.  Look at my propane conversion pics using his kit.  See the generic looking gun metal grey casings?  Thicker and stronger around the fittings vs. a "true" impco regulator or mixer.

yep it is a really nice setup. they just need more stats on dd and they would sell a lot more of there kits

Dr Phat

Question I never looked into with my truck when I did the conversion.

Which vacuum lines can I get rid of? Theres that little plastic can/manifold looking thing with a whole bunch of tubes coming from it, obviously I need the vacuum advance line from the distributer but what else? I think there are two ports on the base plate for vacuum lines.

OldGold3VZE

All you need is 1 line from the base of the carb throttle body to the front most port on the distributor.  The other port on the distributor remains open.  You can ditch all the little plastic stuff associated with any other vacuum lines.

Cool thanks! Time to clean up the engine bay a little.

I have the got propane kit, that i purchased used.  I smell propane when running, so i am thinking it is running to rich.  i have not adjusted the screw on the carb at all.  is that the only adjustment screw on the carb?  Do i screw it in our out to lean out the propane?  Anyone know how i can get mine dialed in so i am not wasting propane?
