Author Topic: Diff Breather Setup? (Read 4210 times)

Ok it's time to do this mod.I have been taking my boat to the lake for the last two weeks and now the rear end has water in it.So I thought it would be a good idea to do this mod before it costs me a new third. I have searched and found a few ideas but I would like to hear from people that have done this. I'm thinking about using a 1/8 npt with a 1/4 barbbed and then connecting an air line to it (the coiled yellow kind you get at harbor freight) and then running it into the rear taillight housing with a cheap walmart filter. What I would like to know is there any downsides to this setup? And if you have done it with the coiled air hose how did you do it? Also will the 1/8 mess up the threads so I cant put the old breather back on?

Hey,

Just use the intake barb piece that connects the brake power booster to the intake manifold, on like a 22R-E or many other Toyota EFI intakes including a 4A-GE/4A-GZE engines found in MR2s and Corollas.

It bolts right onto the diff housing, then just use some rubber hose and route it up and safe. I will be doing this soon

I bet this could be done for less than $5.

Yea I think next time I go to the junk yard I will get a couple of the intake breathers. With these though can I still use the yellow hose and run it into the taillight?

Both of my differentials vent near the hinges on the hood

I used a barbed fitting the threaded into my diffs, dont remeber the size, but I can check it out if you really want me to. Then I bought 12 feet? I think of high pressure high temp hose to fit on the barb, and ran one from my front diff to near my pass. side hood hinge, and the back I ran to my taillight

1.78 x2 = 2.56
.70 x12 =8.40

total 10.96

Not sure how cold it gets where you live, but at about 40*F that plastic yellow coil hose will get brittle and crack.

Only downside I've heard to the coiled hose is that it leaves low spots in the line. I've been told that if oil runs up your hose in a high temp situation and sits in those low spots, come winter time it'll get really heavy and stop the movement of air and clog up the breather. All I did for mine was pop the cap off and clamp fuel hose to the little lip and then RTV around it to make sure its sealed. Same as everyone else, rear line to the taillight, front line to the hinge.

I took off the factory breather and matched it to a brass fitting at Checkers. I then bought enough fuel line to vent the rear up to the top of the rear tail light and the front up to the hood. I used zip ties to secure the hose onto the brass nipples.

I have brass fittings as well and use some cheap clear plastic lines and both diffs breath in the engine and I have a toyota fuel filter on the end of hose

i just ran a brass 1/8" pipe nipple and some 3/8" fuel hose up to the hinge and put a modified NAPA 3011 fuel filter on the end...zip tied in place.

I've only done it to the front so far, as I've heard you shouldn't use fuel hose on the rear because of heat buildup...like the long hose won't expel enough heat? dunno if its BS or not though.

I saw this over on IH8MUD a while back. I think they used a vent ballon from a quad.

I used black fuel line from a lawnmower shop, and it got brittle after about 6 months, just from the heat the diff makes. Use some good quality line or it might crack and let water in. Might not be an issue, but I do alot of highway driving so it has a chance to get the temp up more than just around town.

I use transmission hose up to a cheap fuel filter. The hose/line is expensive, but does not degrade.

I used the nissan breathers on mine. They basically thread right into the diff about a 5 min job.
I just hooked up some 3/16 vaccum lines to them ran then up into the highest point of the frame rails.
I'll move them eventually to a highest spot on the flatbed and use some small filters on em.

I just poped the cap off the stock breather, and hose clamped some fuel line to it, and ran it up to the tail-light and under the hood. Works well. Cost 3-4 bucks for the hose and clamps.

yup,,fuel line to a cheap motorcycle fuel filter..I used the stock fitting with the cap popped off..

found a hose fitting at the hardware store that threaded in, got some black rubber hose and a hose clamp-$4.63 per diff

Uh, just make sure your buddies welding on your Marlin shock hoops don't burn your front diff breather line with the MIG...
