The L43 is the transmission....Weak....replace it.  You could have 4.37 gears, a few of the early trucks came with them, but I don't know how to tell except by spinning the tire\driveshaft.
You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

ibet your 80 was actually assembled in 79,    possibly early 79,  look for the date of manufacture on the drivers door

i never blew up my L43, but i did swap a L52 in.  kinda nice to be able to tell what gear you're in, those l43s are sloppy.

all '79-80 model year trucks had 4.375 gears.

i stopped over where my truck is sitting yesterday to try to get it mobile so i can load it on the trailer and i looked under it at the tranny and it doesn't look like the 43 . l43 has the shifter on the side ? so i checked gear pattern and it's a 5 speed so i guess someone swapped it out already . I'm supposed to pick it up tonight then I'll get a chance to see what's really in it trans and gears . thanks for the help

every now and then you will find an oddball that came with parts that where not suppost to come in that year such as older parts in newer trucks
