22re died any ideas?
« on: Jun 28, 2005, 11:06:22 PM »
my 86 runner started missing real bad the other day it was running like the time I sank it in a mud hole after about 10 min it cleared up and ran fine then today 2 days later as I was leaving work it just died and won't restart I have not done any of the basics yet but it smells like it is getting gas so I am guessing it is in the ignition any ideas on what may of crapped out on me before I have to start buying parts and guessing??

You shouldnt be smelling gas in a fuel injected engine for one thing, so assuming your getting fuel the next thing I would check for is spark. Get a cheap spark tester from Napa or pull a plug wire and hold it close to something steel and have a somebody crank the engine

If you are smelling gas I would check that problem first before I go and check spark.  On the forward end of the fuel manifold there is a plastic cap (dome) covering an adjustment screw.  On my 22re that screw has come out before (vibration..I don't know) and fuel has leaked/sprayed out.  The plastic dome caught the screw luckily (I think is a #2 screw) .  I have also had a leaky injector.  None of this caused my engine to stall  but I did catch the leaks soon enough.  It did take some time to start though, before I discovered the leaks and fixed them.  BE SURE YOU HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER CLOSE BY AND FULLY CHARGED BEFORE YOU START MESSING WITH THE FUEL. :twocents:

I would run your ignition system backwards (IE check power to the coil, then back to the relay and fuse block). Could be as simple as a loose ground wire or dirty relay connection. Also make sure to check your grounds to the motor, 'cause if this is bad, you won't get a spark.

good luck

Toyota's are really easy to do a timing chain on.  Get a manual and follow its directions on swapping it except dont pull the head.  Loosen the oil pan instead to get the timing cover off.  Dont forget about the bolt that is directly under the cam gear bolt sitting in a bath of oil. ;)  Once you get the crank bolt loose turn the engine over by hand till the crank timing mark is on 0* and the cam gear is at about 11:45.  That'll put the engine at top dead center.  Just pull it apart and swap the parts from there on out.  Like i said its really easy.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Keep in mind that 22R*'s are interference engines meaning that when the timing chain breaks the valves and the pistons can collide.

I would plan on doing the head gasket as well so you can see if there is any damage to the pistons or valves.

Thanks for the info I will get started on it as soon as my garage is done and if I get lucky I could win the lottery and just redo the whole engine while I am at it. lol

Thanks
