Idle problems... Any ideas?? 92 toyota 22RE
« on: Jul 23, 2007, 12:37:04 PM »
I have a 94 22RE in my 92 PU.  It is idling kinda high, around 1,400, even though I turned the idle screw all the way to lower the idle.  When I put on the brakes, the idle goes back and forth between 1,000 and around 1,300- 1,400 rmp.   I don't know if this is related, but it also sometimes has to be cranked over more than usual to get started.  And sometimes it starts right up.  I checked vaccum lines and electrical connections.  I also ran an extra ground wire from my intake to the cab...   :dunno:

What about the idle air control? Or the idle compensating switch (vac) on the power steering pump? Those things could go bad and cause a high idle since they're devised to control, change or maintain idle speeds... :yesnod:.

plug off the hoses to each (one at a time) and see if the idle changes or goes normal. You may have to readjust your throttle screw if it's all the way in. If either one seems normal with it disconnected then that's the one causing your problems.

Should be mounted directly below the throttle body just below the manifold... :beerchug:

Okay, I figured out that it only does this when I have the brakes on (when the brake petal is depressed).  Any ideas?

I just went through the same problem with my 93 22re. after tearing the engine down from blown hg (NOT RELATED), I found that the barb for the coolant line that goes from the thermo housing ( red circle ) to the bottom of the throttle body ( blue circle - under tb ) was plugged off with some trash.

Pull the thermo out and the hose beside it that comes up off the side of the housing - pull it loose from that end.{red circle} Try to blow A LITTLE air through the hose(toward the throttle body). When you get air through that ( it will push water out of the thermo cavity), use a pipe cleaner, or a stiff piece of wire and carefully insert it into the barb where the hose was connected, to try to dislodge any foreing material that may be stuck in there. Once you get it to go all the way through, check the thermo cavity for any trash. This water supply heats a valve under the tb to lean out the mixture once it warms up.

Hope that helps.

It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

I'll check that.  I don't know why the idle would be so high...  And then there is that eratic idle...  What confuses me is that it only does it when I put on the brakes.

my engine did that... before the rings blew {NOT RELATED} and it was a few VAC lines that werent plugged in, throttle body was dirty, and my MAF sensor plug was loose.

check all those and what was listed above as well.

right directly on the bottom of the throttle body, i think there are for screws holding it on, take the throttle body off, mark your vac. hoses so they dont get mixed up, remove the for screws on the bottom of the throttle body and clean that bad boy out with carb cleaner!! what it is is a little valve that either uses the coolant or air to control the amount of air bypassing the butterfly (Throttle) and when the air/coolant warms up it opens or closes the valve!! so when you put on the brakes it has a sensor that tells the computer to shut the fuel off for a second and then it revs back up again!! that problem pissed me off so bad i looked everywhere trying to figure it out and found a master toyota mechanic that solved it for me!!! check it out and it will solve that annoying problem, hopefully that does it for ya!

This morning my truck died on me at a stop light.  Aparently whatever was making it idle around 1400 rpm stoped messing up, and the idle returned to normal, which I had set as low as it would go...  Weird.  So I adjusted the idle back to around 700 rpm, and it is working just like it is supposed to work.   :dunno:

seem like the trash, dirt dobbers nest, or what ever was causing your issues is gone. Now the question is where did it go?

I have the same problem with my 22re.  I figured that it was the brake light shorting out the circuit, because it would idle up and down when the brake lights are on. I know that the brake light switch has two wires, one going to the lights and the other coming from the computer.  I even replaced my Idle Air Control Valve, and it still does the same :pokinit:.  What is the heart of this problem.  What do you have to do to fix this??????

Maybe a bad vacuum booster that only leaks when used?
