22RE loaping idle problems

My 22RE is new with only 5,000 miles on it. Ever sense its been put in there has been this dumb problem with the idle and when i wheel its really annoying. The idle will just stop at like 1500 RPM and wont go back to 800RPM(Idle) inless i rev it. When i wheel i will be going over stuff at like 2000RPM and then when i want to slow back down to idle it stays at like 1500, 1200, usually so i have to rev it to get it back to idle and it usually wont go completly back down. The really annoying thing is it loaps from 1000-1200 RPM back and forth over and over. Iv heard it can be the EGR valve or this thing called a DashPod that controlles the idle as it comes back down. Im not sure what it is but its gotta be fixed.

Bleed the air out of your cooling system.  No seriously.  Air in the cooling system will have wacky effects on idle speed, as the bypass valve is controlled by temperature, and if theres air around it instead of coolant, it gets a false reading and freaks out, basically trying to cold-idle when your truck is warm.

First thing I would check is that the throttle cable is working properly, ya know, not binding or anything.  A bad throttle position sensor can cause similar symptoms, loping idle, and sometimes crappy shifting (or lack there of) on auto trannys.  The dashpot is something added for emissions i believe.  The idea behind it is that when you snap the throttle shut, like so do an emergency stop, the ECU can't cut off the fuel as fast as the air was cut off, so it creates a very rich condition for a short period of time.  The dashpot comes into play when the throttle is snapped shut, as it will hold the throttle blade from closing completely (Holding it around 2000 RPM) and then allowing the throttle to slowly close from there, thus controlling that rich condition.  I've thought of removing my dashpot, but I dunno if it'll hurt my motor.  If anyone else knows, I'd love to hear it!

I think the dashpod just needs to be replaced. Iv heard of people just removing them

I've had the same problem... after changing coolant.  Do as Ryan recommends and make sure all of the air is out of the coolant system. 

Here's how I took care of the problem:  Start with a cool engine, remove the radiator cap and remove some coolant so the level is down about an inch.  Leave the radiator cap loose or off and start the engine.  Let the engine warm up so the coolant circulates for a minute or two and the air bubbles should go away.  Top off the radiator and you should be good to go.

I had similar problems with mine.  I first removed the dashpot thinking that it was sticking--didn't help me but I didn't notice any difference in operation.  I ended up resetting/adjusting the tps and that cured all problems that I had (slow loping idle/ fast idle when cold).  It is very sensitive--you have to follow the manual instructions exactly or you introduce a whole group of other problems.  Along with this I adjusted the idle speed and now it runs like a champ.

I have had funky idle problems with my truck, until I found it was low on coolant and topped it off.  It sounds crazy but Like Ryan said, it's true.  Also, the dashpot is a diaphragm unit mounted by the throttle linkage.  Open the throttle by hand and you will see it extend out.  Let the throttle close and see if it holds the throttle shortly, then closes.  I believe it has a filter on the end of it, so if you've been mudding check and see if its clogged.

Um, pretty much listen to what Ryan(Reklund5) says, he's a toy tech after all.  Also, that's what my brother said to me when I had a similar problem and he knows a HELL of a lot more about this stuff than I do.  I would only suspect the tps if it lopes back and forth, but not if it stays at a high rpm till you bat the throttle.

Im haveing the same problem with mine, havnt checked my TPS, dashpot or fuel cutoff valve, started out a high rev. now cant even get it to start, barally idles at full throttle.

not to hijack a thread but the rubber baffle on my dashpot is wasted...broke open with parts of it missing, could that screw up my idle?

Broken dashpot won't affect the idle.
