2006 Toyota FJ Cruiser Discussion Thread
« on: Jun 17, 2005, 08:28:38 AM »
So what is everyone's impression of the new Toyota FJ Cruiser.
It is scheduled for release in the 2006 model year.
I'm thinking of making this my next purchase for my tow rig.

Here is an article from http://www.rockcrawler.com (photos by Dora Fang)
January 7, 2003 -- Detroit, MI -- Toyota unveiled the FJ Cruiser concept sport utility vehicle (SUV) at a press conference today at the 2003 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The FJ Cruiser concept was initiated and developed jointly by Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., and Calty Design Research, Toyota's North American design center in Newport Beach, Calif. The FJ Cruiser was developed as a basic, capable and affordable off-roader aimed to explore new possibilities for a next-generation SUV aimed specifically at young buyers with active outdoor lifestyles. "The FJ Cruiser is a thoroughly modern concept vehicle chiseled from nearly a half-century tradition of rugged performance provided by the legendary FJ 40, the original 4Runner and 4x4 compact pickups," said Jim Press, executive vice president and COO for Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. "The FJ Cruiser concept effectively connects two growing markets in the United States…the light truck segment and the emerging youth market." "The FJ Cruiser takes on an authentic functional form, yet adopts several styling cues from the original FJ," said Jin Kim, the FJ Cruiser’s 25-year-old exterior designer. "Some of these cues are notable on the front end by its wide and narrow grille, round headlights, and offset combination lamps. Additional inspiration can be found through its upright windshield and two-tone cap roof. Traits are also noticeable in the rear with wrapping rear corner windows. The modern shape of the FJ Cruiser is woven into a compact package. Its proportionately long wheelbase and wide track produce enhanced stability and a powerful stance." Utility features include spotlights on both outside mirrors, an asymmetrical front spotlight, and a front-end towing winch. The rear glass panel is a two-piece unit that retracts into the roof and the rear hatch for easy access to the rear cargo area. Easy rear passenger entry into the two-door SUV is achieved with rear access doors. Power is supplied by a 3.4-liter V6 engine equipped with a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) supercharger that creates 250-horsepower. The engine is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive with low range. The FJ Cruiser rides on a modified Tacoma pickup platform and is equipped with rear coil-over long travel suspension, 20-inch wheels and 33-inch tires, and a TRD cat-back exhaust. Calty designer William Chergosky extended the rugged and straightforward theme to the interior. "The cabin is designed specifically for basic functionality and flexible utility," said Chergosky. "The structural beam instrument panel has a sophisticated, handcrafted appearance. The faceplate with round inset instrumentation communicates precision youth market," said Press. "The FJ Cruiser is a thoughtful approach to versatility that allows the customer to decide how the vehicle fits into their active lifestyles." All front and rear seats fold completely flat creating ample cargo space and maximum usability. With no gaps and a durable floor covering, the FJ Cruiser can be converted into a utility deck large enough for two people in their sleeping bags. "It is important for Toyota to raise the emotional pulse of the emerging youth market," said Press. "The FJ Cruiser is a thoughtful approach to versatility that allows the customer to decide how the vehicle fits into their active lifestyles."

I think it's  :stopit:  I can't believe they're even comparing that pile of  :pokinit: to a real FJ-40. I think it's safe to say that the days of buying a good toyota 4x4 are long gone.

Sorry if I offended anyone , but I just hate the direction toyota is headed. I wonder what kind of trail rigs we'll be building 20 years from now ? Probably not a 2006  FJ-cruiser.  :twocents:

5000lbs dont know what your towing but figure 17-1800 for a tandem axle trailer, 32-3500 for a Toyota pickup and your maxed. Unless your talking jet skis I dont think thats a suitable tow rig.  :twocents:

I guess it would only be good if you were going to flat tow everywhere. :dunno:

Looks like it was designed with legos and tinker-toys.   :puke:
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I think it's a neat little truck.  It's competition will be the xterra and liberty and will be priced accordingly.  With the rear locker it's certainly more capable than a stock 1st or 2nd gen 4runner and equivelant truck and possibly more capable than a stock fj40 (assuming you have the stomach for body damage).

Now if you're talking toughness, sure, the FJ40 is way tougher than the fjcruiser.

Personally, I think it's a disgrace in the fact that it's a "cruiser" and it'll be available in 2X4 . THat's why the base price is in the 20K's. I do like that 4.0L though. Looks a little too close to a Scion XB too me. And does everything really need to come with 20''s?   :dunno:
In Progress: 3RZ-FE Swap Underway.

Currently: 87' 4Runner - SAS - 5.29's - welded rear - Dual 2.28 cases - Optima bluetop - round headlight conversion - FZJ80 grill - rattlecan paint job - trimmed fenders - Ranger hybrid springs front - Tacoma hybrid springs rear - schedule 160 drivelines 8" slip front - Marlin's crossmember - disk brake conversion

You know what, it kinda looks like the Marlin Crawler Tortoise with it's rounded backend.   :gap:

But for the most part I agree with bluetoy84.  I don't like the plastic look of it.  I like the winches front and rear, though.  I wonder how you get access to them? :headscratch:

Overall, it just doesn't look like somethin that will ever be taken off-road.

It is my opinion that most of the newer vehicles were designed by Homer Simpson.
1991 Daihatsu Rocky, 3RZ-fe, Marlin super heavey duty clutch and pressure plate, Marlin W56-C-HD, duals, Marlin twinstick, three link front with Fox AirShox, 35's, Toy axles, 5.29:1, ARB F&R etc.

i think its ugly, and i think that due to the success of the wrangler rubicon, toyota should have steped up with a live axle, low gear, selectable locker combination, we all know that they are capable of doing it, id bye one, you all prob at least look at one. i think that it would be better recieved by the public if it wasnt designed to go get groceries :driving:

i don't see it as an out of the box wheeler, but i do see myself picking one up in 20 years when i can actually afford one, and building it.  well, if there's any trails left by then :dunno:

$20k doesn't sound right for toyota these days, i'll be it'd be more in the $30k range...

No live/solid front axle? It defintely doesn't compare to the older FJs. Toyota needs to bring back the solid front axle. Period.

 yeah, so I can take my truck back and tell them they screwed up, forgot to put one in

I read an article the other night on it, and aside from the :bling: of the wheels, and outer appearance, it sooudns like it is pretty capable.  Now if they can make it more capable, that would be sweet.  Oh yeah, and for old times sake, let us take the top off :yesnod:

That much money and no sfa and removable top!  :shocking:  Bring back the old cruisers! No really, this is a joke considering that Jeep makes a few versions of the rubicon and has no challengers in the swb removeable top 4x market.
