Front Locker

I have a 1988 pickup, with a solid axle conversion, i am currently keeping the stock 4:10 gears in it for now, and I just added a lock-right mini locker and with longfield super axles, on 35x12.50 mud tires, goes well when trial riding but wants to bind up every once a while and I can't decide what would be the best way to go when I upgrade the new gears.  I plan on getting Yukon gears, 5:29 front and back, my rear axle is a V6 with a spool. But for the front what is best ARB's or detroit?

ARB.  You can turn it on and off.  Detroit will break birfs and bind too much

If you have the money then go with the ARB.  Detriots aren't that bad in the front, but you can't unlock them when you want.

go with an arb, or electric locker, ive had a lot of rigs, and my last one was the first to have an arb, and i will never go with anything less than a selectable locker

Screw it. You have longfeild's in your truck get a aussie locker for the front that's what I am running.

I might be in the minority here but I can't stand air lockers, it seems almost every time my club goes on a run somebody has trouble engaging the air locker. I want to know that my locker or in my case limited slips are there and working. Now the electric/manual conversion would be an option that I'd be iterested in, one of my club member put one in the back of his 93 extra cab with the cable conversion he had adjustment issues the first time out but since then they've been flawless.

I would imagine for the most part they work just fine, but It'll be that one time that you really need them and you'll push that button and something won't engage. When I'm out somewhere the last thing I want is to come to an obstical and not have everything I need at my disposal. If your equipement is always on you know it's there and fuctioning....... my security blanket.

don't be a detroit sucker,,the detroit for the toy sucks,,its will basicly become a 500 paper weight if you bust an axle,,thats an extreme case,,so playing in the rocks,,your time will come..go arb or aussie up front..I was lucky when my detroit busted,,I had a buddys jusnker laying around to get parts off of and keep mine going..but next time will be all arb baby..

I have been fortunate to have only broken 1 axle, it was a front and it did have a detroit locker didn't break the locker. That may be due to the way I drive though and the fact that it was an auto-trans. A "selectable" locker would be a good thing I am refering to an air "selectable" locker letting you down when you need it the most. Too much stuff involved, now the Toyota electric locker with the cable conversion...... I'm up for that.

What about an air over hydraulic conversion for the ARB? No I don't know anything, but it could be done. The air has been known to leak, but hydraulic will be harder to slip past the seals. Like your clutch, but with an air acuated master.

So far I love my ARB's, but they haven't failed to date. If they do I will try this conversion on my own.

Hey Wiilly, you should put that in the 4wd suggestions and ideas section.  Better yet, make it and sell it to ARB or whoever and become very wealthy    .

On the real though, that is a cool idea.
