Hey ya'll,
Ok here's the story.  My grandmother was given till the middle of this summer a few weeks ago.  Well, today she fell and cracked her pelvis.  My co-worker happened to leave the keys we needed at my grandma's house, so my other co-worker had to drive a town over to get the keys. Thank God the whole mix up happened, cuz she found my grandma on the floor in the hallway, couldn't move.  She has been ordered to bedrest, but the problem with that is she gets frequent panic attacks when she's in bed.  So I'm askin whoever out there is religious and isn't offended by me asking, please pray for her.

I'm not asking for sympathy, just prayers.

Thanks in advance
Justina

How old is she FFC?

Not that that matters for the prayer people, but I'm a realism person and like to deal with issues on a real life basis.

Panic attacks can be dealt with, she doesn't have to live with that. If she's young enough the fall may not be a huge issue. The older, the more detrimental, of course.

It wasn't until my grandmother was in the last years of her life, when she was in her late 80-90's, that was realized all this time she was not just an honery biatch, but she was suffering from depression. Don't blow off pyschological problems, there are solutions.

And get your grandmother one of those emergancy alert thingies.

I believe she is close to 65, and had an emergency alert thing, I don't know what happened to it.  She smoked all her life, been through lung cancer a couple times, had a lung and a half removed a few years back.  That's when she wizened up and quit smokin.  She's got 24 grandkids and I don't konw how many great grandkids.  5 kids of her own, a bunch of kids on her husband's side.  HUGE family and we're all prayin for her and rooting her on.
I wouldn't be surprised if she was depressed.  She has never been so helpless in her life.  She's the type of woman who worked for what she wanted.  She started the group home that I work for, 37 years ago by herself.  She's got tons to live for.  I just hope she doesn't get so discouraged and give up on herself...

I will keep her in my prayers. Hope everything goes well.

If her Doctors have ordered strict bed rest, she must not have too serious of a fracture(s), (a pelvis fracture always breaks in 2 places) as typical pelvis fractures require surgery. Ask her doctor to provide an anxiolytic medication (Xanax, Valium, Ativan etc) for her, and if there is some underlying depression, unless contraindicated, Paxil or Lexapro has good coverage for anxiety. Make sure she moves around in bed to avoid pressure sores, (decubitus ulcers), as many folks who get these have very bad outcomes.

The other thing to worry about is a deep vein thrombosis. These occur with bed rest, Her doctor should order some TED's stockings or pneumatic stockings to help prevent this.

Hope this helps (and doesn't scare you too much)

Ok, so my mom went and visited her, she got a nice dose of morphine last night and she had the best night's sleep in months.  My mom says she looks a lot better, and seems happier after having slept so well.  Things are starting to look up.  I have to go see her after this weekend (very busy weekend), maybe I'll print that out and take it to her doc Erik.  I appreciate it! Thanks guys you guys are great.

Thanks BD I'll let her know, but she will be clueless.  She can spend days on Ebay but can't figure out how I can spend all day on a 4x4 site  :hammerhead:

Very common to do what is known as a "step down". Means she doesn't need the intense care of the hospital, but still needs skilled nursing to care for her. These are fantastic places (usually), where they start with physical therapy, and get her ready to resume an independant lifestyle. Not uncommon to stay in one of these SNF's (skilled nursing facility) for 2-6 weeks then return home. They will often work with family to help them prepare for the return home, and for any ongoing care she may need.

Keep us posted on her progress.

Thanks, I wasn't sure how common this was I've never seen it done before.  I was just surprised it took so long to get to her daughter that she was there  :tantrum:

yea...unfortunatly communication can sometimes fall apart. There is usually a case manager that is supposed to keep family informed of what's going on, but unfortunatly it doesn't always work right. We'll keep her in our prayers for a fast and complete recovery.

Just another thought...

Once this has finally resolved, she may want to consider a bone density test to check for osteoporosis. There are several very good medications that help to either increase bone density or at least prevent the loss of more density. Of course her regular doc will have to go thru her history to make sure there is no contra-indication for it, but she's getting to the age where this is a concern.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.  I had a talk with my mom yesterday and she has been to see her a few times.  She says she fractured her pelvis in 2 places, broke her finger, and broke her arm.  I didn't know bout the finger and arm part.  Grandma is doin better, her spirits are down but she walked 4 steps like yesterday or something (I don't know the details), and that is said to be a huuuge improvement :hyper:

Thank you guys for ur thoughts and prayers

Hey guys,
I went and saw gramma today.  She was sitting up in her chair in her living room AT HOME! She has been home for a couple days due to an anxiety attack and she couldn't stay at the care facility any longer.  So my uncle built a ramp in her living room so she could get up the stairs (2 of them to the kitchen) and she is in a wheel chair when she's not watching tv or in bed.  She looks pretty good, but she sounds really weak. Overall she's made a huge improvement!!!
