Tonka Update
« on: May 30, 2005, 05:31:18 PM »
Well ladies and gentlemen,
I have finally got those wretched birfields out. My left (driver side) birfield was okay, but my right (passenger side) was totally disintegrated. I am glad I didn't ruin my housing. I have a few photographs to show you guys (and gals). It kinda looks like a beetle insect without the huge front tires. Anyway, anything I should do while I got everything apart? I was thinking about sand blasting the knuckles, but they aren't that bad as far as corrosion is concerned, so I think I will leave them alone. What sucks is the fact that I just had everything rebuilt as far as seals, bearing, felts, and those things go. Have a good one!

Check out my red skid plate. I guess you can tell it takes a beating. lol. I guess if I am hitting the skid plate with something this high I am probably doing something I am not supposed to be doing, right? Well, enjoy the photographs.

Here are some more photographs of my bent steering stop. Does Marlinn sell those little things? How can I fix that bugger? Is it that important that I try to repair it because it is still on there, but it is bent in a little more than it was.
Thanks!

Either try to straighten it, or add some metal to the outside, and then build two triangle caps and weld it up to strengthen it out.

Quick fix is to put a bolt in each of them. IIRC 3/4 fits in there snug. It will keep them from getting bashed in.

If i had 4 stands i would use them all.  Btter to be safe then sorry!  My steering stops were bent when i picked up my donor axle.  I heated them up with a torche and bent them back out were ithought they should be and then plated the top and bottom of them like Chris did with the buggy.  Here is my axle.

I know I didn't have to use four jackstands, but I just wanted to be safe. I don't even think the two jackstands in the middle are even touching the axle, but I thought it would be good insurance if the outer stands disappeared somehow. I would cry if anything else happened to the Tonka. I mean, I just have to stop going up hills and out ont the trail without deflating my tires. I will probably be even more hesitant about getting off-road after I get all of this repaired. I am finding that it is not difficult, just time consuming. Well, thanks for all the help and comments! You guys are the best!
