i wouldn't use a stock tranny behind a 302 -- and as a general rule, if you have to ask how much an engine swap is gonna cost you probably don't have any business doing it.

if i were to run a 302, i might look for an NV3550 out of a newer jeep, and adapt it to the 302(probably cheap, AA sells a bellhousing) and the toy t-case), it can take over 300lbs of torque reliably.  there's always the tried and true option of a NP435 or T18 4 speed as well, but you lose overdrive and you most likely have to cut out your heater box(tranny shifter comes out way forward of stock).

Ask Brandon, he did it in his 1st gen.  I think he has a buildup on his site as well

I'm thinking about it but not sure yet. Oh BTW $$$ is not the issue I just don't want to have to do a lot of hacking and welding on it.

From memory of a long ago post on ORC's ML:

Exhaust is a bit of an issue, most headers point at the frame or hit it, AA's don't count as headers - those are tubular manifolds

Bellhousing doesn't clear a non BL'd firewall (Yotas have an exceptionally compact b/h design)

Really wants the Exploder front dress for radiator clearence

Scott E @ Rockstomper did it a long time ago using an NV4500
Cross threaded is tighter than Locktite

Dellow in Australia has the bellhousing, but they are next to impossible to get ahold of. It would be nice if someone with some extra bucks laying around would buy a lot (10 or so) from them and dispurse them in the US. Marlin? How 'bout it?

Hey Fatbody, if you do decide to do a buildup make sure you start a thread, and be as detailed as possible.  I'm sure there are a lot more of us out there that dream of doing this too, but the obvious cost and hassle keep us at bay.  And truly, just because you ask doesn't mean you don't have any business doing it, why should inquisition be a sign of shallow pockets or a lack of ingenuity?  Everyone on this board has the potential to do big projects, it's more a matter of whether or not they can realize their potential.  No need to be cuttin on the nice guys here...........

I've got a 5.0 HO in my '85.  Total cost was around $2,500.00 including  $700.00 to rebuild the AOD.  The adapter from the AOD to the TC was around $540.00 from Partsmikepart.  It took about a month from start to finish.  I kept the SS manifolds and yes you have to modify the passenger side to miss the frame.  I use a 3 row Toyota radiator, tranny cooler and a 2000cfm pusher fan to cool it.  No room for a mech. fan.  I went with the auto because it's more dependable and the overdrive is great.  I get 18mpg at 70mph and the truck ways about 4klbs.  The engine came out of a '91 Thunderbird.  It has 140k on it and runs perfect.  I've put 10kmiles on it so far without a single problem.  In my opinion it's the only way to go, and go it does. :beerchug:

i'm doing the swap myself and going more toward how brandon did his. i didn't like the idea behind the adapter for a stock trans because i just knew i could get a used t5 and get the shafts made at a less or equal price as the adpater kit and be stronger. but its however you want to go about doing it.

i jsut picked up a runner with a 5.0. i have a 4 speed tranny out of a older f-250. with the 4 to 1 t-case and the granny gear i would say it compares to a dual case setup. when you can put it in 4low and first, stand on the breaks and not stall. thats pretty sick. so i am backing the 4 speed. i can still  drive 80+ on the highway.
is it bad when you unplug the power wire from your stereo and it still plays

Just in case FordFreakChick reads this thread...and I was born a Chevy man (I actually think that all the domestics are about equal) I would have to propose another most cost effective option.

If your current goal is a Toyota Truck with a Ford 302 engine, you should do the following:
(1) Remove stock engine and sell
(2) Place truck on blocks in back yard
(3) Accept that it won't ever run right again

This plan will save you the trouble of having to fix the truck every time you turn the key  :ha_ha:

Please keep in mind that this is just a joke, but it was the first thing that I thought of when I read the thread.  :driving:
1989 4Runner: Dual Ultimate (Inchworm front & Marlin 4.70 rear), Marlin Twin Stick, 1200-lb clutch, 4.88 R&P, Aussie Front, Detroit rear, 30-spline Longs, Long hub gears, ARP hub and knuckle studs & 35x12.50 Cooper STT PRO tires.  Marlin rear bumper & sliders.  FROR front bumper.  SAS with Alcan springs & Rancho 9000XL shocks.  Budbuilt Bolt-on traction bar.  Custom Interior Cage by Those Guys Rod and Customs.

Moab Tested & Rubicon Approved

I take it you used the Toy transfer case/cases? How hard do you wheel it with the AOD - sounds like it's not a trailer queen. I have too many AOD's to use anything else at this point, so I'm wondering how well it will hold up to - well - my heavy right foot and being made to run at 90 deg + side angles.

The Toy Turbo radiator is enough for the 302 you say  :-\\  I was worried it might not be enough cooler for the 5.0, but most of my inside fender wells will be gone so heat will dissipate. Do you have any photo's of your rigs engine and tranny setups?

Quit already  ???  You can do it... rah rah rah

I don't think it's too big a deal campared to some other things out there. I just have to know how this combo runs - I've been committed to doing it for about three years so far but doing it when I stumble across the parts I need to get it launched  :flamer: I'm getting another 302 EFI tomorrow morning. Now I think I have plenty of engines just down to drive train componets now. Nothing runs like a V-8  :disturbed:

What about a Lexis v8, they are Toyota aren't they? They should have overhead cams too unlike the 1950 technology that the big three are still using.

I think what I'm gonna do is put a Toy V6 like what is in my 98 Runner. It has plenty of power.
