Transmission swap questions: L45 to R151f
« on: Feb 10, 2021, 01:46:31 PM »
I am going to look at a R151f to swap into my '82 pickup to replace the 4 speed.  Anything in particular I should be looking for?  For this swap, if I am wanting to run dual cases would I want to convert the R151f front shift case to a top shift and then run my original top shift behind it?

Im going to look at a R151f, transfer case, and bellhousing.  Can anyone advise me on what I should be looking for to make sure it is rebuildable?

With the R151F.. you will leave the forward shift tcase on it,( only using the crawl box) then you'll need a 23 spline adapter. Then you'll need to source a 23 spline top shift transfer case for the rear. If your planning on running the 4.7 gears in the rear box. Just make sure you order the 23 spline set..

Thanks for the reply.  I do plan to use my current top shift case behind it with 4.7 gears.

Anything in particular I should be looking out for to make sure the transmission and T-case is rebuildable or anything to look out for?

The first thing I would look at is the bellhousing..only the r151f has a hole, about 3" in diameter on bottom of bellhousing.. no hole, not a true r151f bellhousing.. unfortunately it's hard to see the condition of the gears without splitting it apart. Check all the threads.. being aluminum its easy to mess them up..

If it comes with a shifter, I'd put in every gear and rotate the input.. good luck...

Did you ever get this trans and get it put in your truck? I can't find a G/W trans anywhere around me so this may be an easier option
