L45 to W56 swap + dual cases Double wammy
« on: Sep 12, 2010, 03:09:06 AM »
Hi all, Im planning on swapping out my L45 for my W56 sitting in the garage, its waiting for duals so it can all get done at once, should be very soon now :willynilly:  I know about cutting and extending drive lines, no biggie. But I still have some Q's
Im already struggling going up I80 to get up to the trail (i live in rocklin and go to fordyce Alot) i have to down shift into 3rd some times, is power going to be even more of a problem with the W56? I dont want to be at 5 grand just to get up the hill, gear ratios for the L45 would nice to see if someone has em, so i can compare to the w56 gear sizes.
Also will it be possible to use two stock cross members with the w56 and duals? The w56 will be about 5.5 inches longer, and duals is another 7. I wanna reuse mine if possible and i can get another from the boneyard, Ill be using U-bolts to hold em up, seems to work.
If anyone has pointers on this swap let me know im sure im forgetting something. ill take all the help i can get
   Thanks fellas.

L45 ratios:  1st 3.928  2nd 2.333  3rd 1.451  4th 1.000
W56 ratios: 1st 3.954  2nd 2.141  3rd 1.384  4th 1.000  5th 0.850

As far as crossmembers go I'd buy a dual skid.  It gains you 2"-3" of belly clearance and 2 tcase mounts.  You might be able to move the stock xmember all the way back to the rear tcase and buy a nice aftermarket mount that would maybe hold up to the extra torque.

ive been running my stock cross member for about 6 years under my rear case, the front case has a tcase mount but nothing under it :(
worked fine for years.

also  why get rid of the L45??  its a good trans and unless your running 5.29's and 33's your not gonna use 5th anyway.  I know I dont.

thx for the numbers, solved my curiosity.  And im replacing it one because, its 30% stronger than the G tranns guessing bout the same for the L series, plus mine is really old and has so many miles on it, the way is been getting louder&louder lately i really dont want to break it wheelin or on the fwy.  other reasons, my clucth is toasted and the w56 is payback for some work i did, Might as well beef it up Ey! oh yea and im running 4.88s so it should fine. and for xmembers ill just do 2 stock ones then. were you able to use two gen1 xmembers or a gen2 for the rear tcase?
