Changing a L45 transmission for a L50 or L52
« on: Mar 20, 2017, 09:59:22 PM »
I have purchased a new to me 1981 DLX 4X4 pickup, which I am very excited about. The truck is mainly in a stock shape, with the exception of new 33” BFG tires, which I plan on getting rid of in lieu of 31” tires. The BFG tires look great but it feels that it robs the truck of much needed power. It currently has a top shift L45 transmission and I would like to swap it for a L50 or L52 transmission purchased from Marlin Crawler. As some other posters, have noted it seems extremely difficult to reach any one by telephone in order to verify the items I would need to purchase. So, I am going to ask members here for some help. The truck has 165 thousand original miles, so the clutch is on its last leg also, thus prompting this transmission swap in the near future. This truck is predominantly going to be a pavement prince, with the occasional camping trip thrown in during the spring and summer months. Thanks, in advance for the advice and I look forward to participating on the forum.
1.   Any reason to stay with a L50 transmission verse a L52 which in not current for my model year
2.   Can I use the existing bellhousing, shift fork, rubber shift boot and shifter from a L45 on a L50/52 transmission?
3.   Can I use an Aisin clutch kit or is something else available better than OEM equipment?
4.   Any reason to hang onto the L45 transmission?

I swapped a L series 5 speed into my 1979 toyota pickup 4x4, and there is nothing special needed. It bolts directly to the old crossmember, and yes you can use the same clutch kits with it.

It's a direct swap, but I would highly recommend changing it to a G or W series transmission rather than another L series.
