Craigslist 20r/22r hybrid engine
« on: Oct 14, 2017, 06:26:42 PM »
The 20r in my pickup died a few months ago and I've been trying to decide on a reman 22r or rebuilding my own. I just came across a 20r/22r hybrid on craigslist and am interested. I don't know much about the hybrid motors, but it I got a video and it seems to run healthy. It is advertised as "Double row timing chain. Performance high lift cam. Larger intake and exhaust valves. Side draft mikuni carbs.".. I've heard that modifying a 20r or 22r too much could make them unreliable, or am I wrong?

if you're pushing 160hp then sure it won't be as reliable....but none of that stuff is a super increase in power. The timing chain is a reliability upgrade. People daily stuff that's more souped up than that and it's fine. how well is that motor built, well :dunno:

Well, it's a pretty big gamble to to buy this motor and I'm not the betting type. I probably just wasted space on the forum haha. But thanks for the response.

I'd rather someone ask and save themselves the headache oc what could've happened. I'd be wary of a Craigslist motor only because who knows what quality of parts they used unless they have papers to prove their word.

I would build that motor and run it but I wouldn't buy it second hand.  On the flip though, if you could get it cheap enough and tear it down, check it out, then it's certainly a good set of parts.

There is really nothing crazy about a hybrid in itself.  I would want to know more specifics about the cam, valves, what rings and pistons were used, was it an old 22r bottom end with a cleaned up 20r head on it or was it a complete fresh re-build.  If you had some idea of what you were getting into, that would be good.
