Mechanic in New Orleans Area
« on: Feb 20, 2017, 08:05:32 PM »
Any good+recommended mechanics in the New Orleans area? Moved here from Houston a couple of years back and gave up my garage.  :-\  Recently did the timing chain/water pump on my 82 Pickup w 22R in a rush job under the carport. It was 100% miserable and I must have messed something up because I now have a bad oil leak...

1yr old doesn't like to hold tools for more than an hour so i'm trying to find someone else to take it apart and put it back together again.

Update:  Never found anyone... Started reversing the timing chain job last week and we'll see how long it takes to get taken care of!

It's done! This time have an extremely minor oil leak at the interface between the head/cover. Looks like it is coming from the area of the "hidden" bolt between the two.  Might be able to get away with some ultra black squeezed in the right place...

Set the distributor timing last night and detect an occasional miss so I'll be on to diagnosing that next.

Didn't realize anyone was still paying attention to this thread!

If you did not put any sealant on the top and bottom of the gasket when you put the front cover in it will forever leak.

Coated the whole TC cover gasket with High Tack. Also Top interface with Head/Bottom Interface with Oil Pan got a nice thick bead of ultra black.  Seems nice and sealed up except for that one tiny baby little annoying leak up on the topside somewheres...

I'll deal with it at some point, but I am a lot better off than I was a month ago!

Found the source of the leak... Blue star is the offset piece of the timing chain cover where the "hidden" bolt threads under the distributor drive gear.

Guess I'll be doing this job one more time with a new TC cover

Funny thing is the crack is not noticeable when that bolt is not torqued and spreading it.

Very common. People don't see the bolt hiding under the oil. Then try to pry the cover and you see what happens.
