Solid axle 3rd Member Interchange?
« on: May 07, 2016, 08:47:38 PM »
Been doing some searching and pretty sure I know the answer, but would appreciate it if one of you knowledgeable folks would confirm or correct for me.

All 4WD solid axle 3rd members interchange from '79 -'95.   Is that correct?

That sounds right. My 85 rear third is in my 89 rear housing so I know it goes that far at least.

thanks!

bestgen4runner - could you be more specific?  What do you mean by "newer" ones?  Specific years?  And are they a direct bolt-in without having to change anything else?

Also, what years/applications would have a high pinion?

For the moment I need to find a 3rd I can swap in with no hassles as I broke my ring gear and need the truck back on the road ASAP.

Also - the front and rear solid axles are the same, aren't they?  In other words, I could put a rear third from a later model truck into the front solid axle of my '84... right?

If it's a 8" diff front or rear it will work for what you at after.
Don't pay more than $50
You need to know your gear ratio,
Did you break the rear?
Why not just replace ring and pinion only.

Easiest and fastest way to get this fixed is going to be to pull a third member from a wrecking yard or truck someone is parting and bolt the whole thing in.

I don't have the tools/knowledge to set up the gears so would have to pay someone to do that, plus the gears themselves aint cheap and if I'm going to be rebuilding a third member then I'm going to want to put a locker or tru trac in and change the gear ratio too.

Just need to get this truck back on the road in the next few days so swapping the entire 3rd is the easiest and probably cheapest way to do it, though I bet I'll have to pay more than $50.  Aint nothing cheap in this neck of the woods.

Gears are 4.10s.

Just triple-checking here - a V6 third member will work, right?

Found an '88 V6 truck parting out and it has a pretty clean interior in it, too and I've been wanting to replace my interior.

If you don't already have a v6 3rd in it you are gonna have to grind a little bit off the sides of the housing where the diff goes in to make it fit , I did this with my my 87 ifs rear, but once you clearance the housing you can run v6 3rds or 4cly

I HAVE INSTALLED MANY V6 3RDS WITH NO GRINDING REQUIRED.
THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE SEEN WHEN CHANGING TO V6 IS THE DRIVE SHAFT FLANGE. FLANGE IS NOT INTERCHANGEABLE DUE TO PINION SIZE.
THERE ARE MULTIPLE FLANGE BOLT PATTERNS. THIS CAN BE SOLVED BY INSTALLING A NEW FLANGE THAT HAS MULTIPLE PATTERNS DRILLED INTO IT.
HOPE THAT HELPS.

BIG HELP!  LOL

Thanks for the warning, I probably would have got it home, installed it, and then been really pissed when I went to hook up the driveshaft.

So that leads to the next question - are the U-joints the same between 4-cyl and 6-cyl?  If they are, I can just take the yoke off the end of the V6 driveshaft and put it on my 4-cyl driveshaft so it'll mate with the pinion flange.

Still looking for a replacement 3rd member. That ad I referenced above was posted by some dummy who didn't include any contact info.  On lunch break now, time to start calling wrecking yards.

I get them from work now and then. I sell them on craigslist for $50 for open diff 4cyl. more for v6.
apparently the wrecking yards are crazy.
Try Fred's in Enumclaw. small yard but they sell for cheep. other wise its craigslist.
Don't be afraid to dicker on the price.
I will start hunting craigslist for you.

That would be great if you could find something!   I've done what I believe is a pretty thorough CL search and there's just nothing out there right now.  One '88 V6 truck in Stanwood but that's the guy who didn't include any contact info.  He's probably wondering why no one's calling him... LOL   :hammerhead:

Sounds to me like you've been selling them too cheap...

If it is standard pinion then it does not.

I  was mostly saying it cuz it was used in the front so it was broken in that way.
