The fusible links are right at the battery.

Yeah it should be the smaller wires coming right out of the battery clamp.

iv seen more first gens without fusable links than with. over the years i guess they just get eliminated. if you dont have them get them ASAP or replace with fuses.

i didnt realise  i was missing the fusable links on my 80 until i had a real bad weekend on the trail and my truck almost burnt. i suffered the humiliation of being towed off the trail by a j#*p yj  and to top off my weekend the tow truck driver had a j#*p tattoo on the back of his neck! pretty weird but thats a true storey. after that i did my homework and installed a good under hood fuse block. turned out my coil wire had got burnt with weld spatter and shorted to my shock hoop.

I hate all the wires going from the battery terminal.  What I do is, buy a small fuse block, and run a large gauge wire to it, with a 30amp fuse inline.  Then run all my accessories off that fuse block.  So, if you have a issue with power to something, then you can take a volt/ohm meter right down the line till you find the blown fuse.

The issue with fusible links is, when they blow, they discolor.  But most of our rigs are dirty under the hood, so its hard to find a discolored link.
