Clutch differences?
« on: Dec 09, 2012, 10:23:44 AM »
I have searched and can find the info I'm looking for.  I have a '91 short bed with a w56 transmission. When I got the truck it didn't have an engine in it. I have a 22RE for it and I'm trying to put the truck together with parts that I already have. Pretty much the only thing I have left to figure out is the clutch. I have a clutch set out of a '86 4x4. According to the parts stores the '91 and '86 take the same flywheel, same clutch disc, and same slave cylinders. The pressure plates and throw out bearings are different so I would assume the clutch release fork is different also. So, what I am thinking is, I can use the '86 clutch set I have as long as I change the release fork and throw out bearing. Does anyone know if this will work? Thanks for any info.

yes it will work as long as you use the 89 stuff on the fork and the pressure plate and throw out bearing,  the problem will be not a few things one if it doesnt work your clutch will slip from not disengaging

Ive got a 89 trans in my barn w56 c

Ok thanks. I went ahead and installed the clutch from the '86 on my 22RE and pulled the clutch release fork and throw out bearing from my '86 w56. I was hoping to get the engine set in my truck this afternoon but it started getting dark and cold fast tonight. I'm going to give the clutch set up a try.

Pretty much all the 22R/RE clutches will work, including the Turbo clutch.  Which is the same clutch as the 92/93 on up 22R/RE's. (iirc) Then the V6's and 3RZ's take different ones.   The only difference between the Turbo clutch and non-turbo clutch is 9/16" larger clutch face.  And the flywheel is like two pounds heavier vs. non turbo flywheel.
