Clutch Not Disengaging?
« on: Aug 23, 2012, 01:23:54 PM »
Well, another day another problem  :talkingn: Seems that I'm having an issue with my clutch. Put in a brand new clutch from Marlin and had the flywheel resurfaced a few months back (has just sat in the garage since then). Now when I push in the clutch pedal and try to put the transmission into gear it's a no go. Goes into gear fine when not running.

Checked the slave cylinder and it moves as it should, even put in another I had and that didn't help.  Thinking maybe the clutch is sticking to the flywheel not letting itself to become disengaged. Anything else that might be causing this? Is there something I can try without pulling the transmission? Any help would be appreciated.

Did not know that. So should I adjust it out more?

Also figure it's a good idea to just replace the clutch master and slave cylinder now. Everything is old and rusty now anyway.

Swapping in slaves did you bleed it? Just like brakes.

Yep, it was bleed. Both slaves worked (had someone push the clutch while I got under the truck and looked).

Ok now the fork the slave pushes on. Is the throw out bearing installed correctly? Not backwards and all clips in place?

Verify clutch actually is holding by turning the drive line or pushing the truck while in gear.

Like I said in the OP I installed everything a few months back, but I'm pretty sure it was all put together correctly.

I'm also pretty sure the clutch is holding because when I torqued down the output nut on the t-case I had to have someone put a breaker bar on the crank so it wouldn't turn.

Put it in 5th gear and start the truck,  let out the clutch.
your clutch has seized to the flywheel,  i had my motor out for a month installed it same thing.  couldnt get it to work. put it in 5th gear  started it, let the clutch out, it broke it free,  i dont know thats was my fix

Tried it, no go. Guess I'm going to have to pull it.

Hmm, so what happens when you push the clutch in and try to start it?

In gear? It would move.

Already pulled it. Everything still looks new.

Here you can see a light brown coloring on the clutch disk. Thinking that it rusted and stuck to the flywheel.

you pulled that quick!!!!!!!!  yeah i had that problem, but  by putting it in a high gear and starting it and letting out it fixed it for me,  that could have been, was the disc hard to remove or did it just pop right out?

I did think that would work, but for whatever reason it didn't for me.

The disc wasn't hard to remove, came right out. Hope that I fixed whatever was causing the problem. We'll see tomorrow.

Looking at your pictures, got me thinking.   :headscratch:   First of all, there isn't enough rust to cause the clutch to stick to the flywheel.  Which them led me to think about one other thing.  Which way did you install the clutch disc, because, if you mount it backwards, it won't disengage from the flywheel because of the offset.  Supposedly the side with the springs on needs to be against the flywheel.  IIRC!  I went through my build, cause I thought I had pictures, but I don't.

All I can say is...

And Cheesemaker, the side with the springs goes toward the transmission. Checked the fsm and here.

Will you forgive me?  :cheese:

Not really sure. It did sit for 6+ months so that probably had something to do with it. Like I posted there was some light rust on the clutch disk.

Think I forgot to mention that I also replaced the clutch master and slave cylinder, but that still didn't help. Then I pulled the tranny.
