clutch advice
« on: Nov 14, 2010, 03:51:08 PM »
so i know there are a lot of guru's here, im sure some one can answer this one. i bought the 1200 pound ceramic comp clutch kit that marlin offers and a new fly wheel, put all of it in & i'm noticing some issues - problem 1.) when i let the clutch out to start going it feels like it grabs and the whole truck shakes until its fully engaged,if i just sit there and let the clutch out just before it fully engages  i can feel the truck wanting to shake and then start to go instead of just smoothly slowly starting to go. i payed close attention to keeping the disc and flywheel clean. problem 2.) while driving normally shifting from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th or even just going to park and put it in reverse when i let the clutch out it seams to slam together it make a thump you can hear. what did i do wrong and how can i fix it? thanks for any help.

what you did wrong is you bought a ceramic clutch.  they are labeled COMPETITION for a reason.  what you described is EXACTLY how ceramic clutches engage.

the only thing you can do to fix it is call Marlin and order a 1200 NON ceramic clutch disc.
as far as I know the only difference is the disc.

Nimyad its called clutch chatter, its actually a "bent clutch" sometimes when replacing the clutch the transmission becomes hung-up when re-installing it and it puts A Lot of weight on the clutch disc, this actually bends or warps the metal ring in the center of the disc. The only fix is a new clutch disc. I accidentally bent mine cuz my clutch wasnt aligned enough. Its no big deal though wont hurt much , just wear the clutch a lil faster, big whoop
I blame the automatic transmission for the wussification of America
If Its got tits tires or electronics, your gonna have problems
I drive a jeep cuz toyota doesn't make strollers

Yeah.  Mine grabbed like a drowning child the first 500 miles, then was perfectly well behaved.  Well, expect that it was on/off(you commit and hit the gas NOW or else it flat out stalls on you), but my old Mercedes had a similar clutch feel, so I was used to it.   I personally liked mine.  Plenty of people here do as well, so a slightly used clutch will still be worth something in the FS section.

And, yes, it did stall on me shifting from 2nd to 3rd once.  Not mistake-friendly.
