Cannot shift-clutch mstr. cyl. or clutch-or both
« on: Jan 15, 2003, 08:47:33 AM »

I cannot shift my 82 4spd. into any gear, and when I turn it on in gear with the clutch pressed i'm already in gear.  The clutch cylinder is full so I checked the clutch pedal and the return spring was broken.  My question is how do I know if the clutch itself is worn or just the master cylinder went bad?  Any advise would be appreciated!

 Dave

Check the slave cyl. The lever should move at the bell housing. If not it is the hydrualics. I would replace both the Master and slave.

Cool, i'll go check that.  How difficult is it to change the slave cylinder?

 Thanks,

it's way easy.
it's just two bolts and a fluid line.
then bleed.
don't get brake fluid in your eyes like i've done.

if your neara winter slaty area or coast line good luck..the best you could do is keep it sprayed with lost of fresh water to help keep the salt off..once it starts though get on it and fix it..It can get out of hand real quick..what rust you have fix and keep clean.thats about all you can do..Look in some of the 4x4 mags or some paint shops. There is a great coating thats made but I can't recall the brand name but I used it on a f-40 I had..will seal and kill rust for good clean finish work..My fj-40 after 4 years never showd one sigh of rust comming back after treatment..I know its still sold..
