87 Runner
« on: Sep 11, 2010, 01:56:52 PM »
I finally got everything put together in my runner. When I turned the key, I heard the starter working but the engine wouldn't start. I did notice that the gas gauge wasn't workin after I put over 3 gallons of new gas in the tank. I did dump the old gas as it was in the vehicle for more that 5 yrs. I am wondering if the fuel pump isn't working after being in the tank with the old gas for such a long time. How do I test the fuel pump in order to find out if it is working?

crack the fuel line to the 5th injector on the intake and if gas spews into your face you re fuel pump works

If the engine is turning over, but not firing up, it is either fuel, spark, air, or timing.  Start checking to see what you don't have in correct in the mix.

This '93 FSM should walk you through the process of checking the fuel pump, spark, timing, etc.  If you can't get the timing within the adjustment range of the distributor, pull it out and turn it one tooth forward or backward at a time, until you can set the timing.

There is a acess panel under the back seat for the fuel pump. Flip up the seat, take 3 screws out n there's the top of tank. Then you can check the wires n fuel lines on the tank. You maybe able to hear if the pump is runnin or not while crankin over the engine. I would take a look at that n go from there.

What did you put back together? Did you rebuild the engine?

If you are going to crack the cold start injector (the 5th injector on the intake plenum), crank it for 20 seconds or so, than crack it.  If it sprays fuel you are good with fuel pressure.

If you took the distributer out, my money is on timing, however you could have other issues like clogged fuel filter. Used to have that problem on my old Civic (which burnt to the ground in the 4 mile fire, in boulder, two weeks ago). It sat for a long time and some crud built up in the tank and would keep it from running. I figured out it was the fuel filter, and I carried an extra all the time.  It would actually just die in the middle of the road when it got clogged, like dead as a F'ing door nail dead.  I replaced it maybe 4 times, and never had a issues with it after that.

I bought a running 22re engine and installed it in my 87Runner. The old engine needed a complete rebuild thanks to Pep boys.
