There really isn't any major differences from 86 to 89 except for different versions (dress packages) and engine/trans options You pretty much can use parts body-wise with one or the other. I know my 86 had different door panels than most since it was the Turbo package but other than that kind of stuff it was the same as any of my friends 4Runners.  84 and 85 had straight axles and that would be the biggest difference even with those.

I understand this is old but good info for newbs

Ok wow no one added the goods, Well

there is a difference.

The Manifolds were newer with a newer style TPS and newer wiring with a newer ecu to help control the new 850 cfm fuel injectors, the 87 were 800 cfm   the the injectors them selves were newer and shot out more fuel = more power,

and the intake was a strait shot in the intake compared to the 87 style that was curved.

better power better computer newer stuff and has a diagnostic plug in that is newer also

old topic but
my 89 had 3 point rear seatbelts and inset cargo pockets my 86 doesn't, but the bolts are there in the rollbar to mount them.. I use one to secure my highlift...
don't know if that was sr5 thing or an 89 thing though.
also I think in 88 toyota ditched the wing windows.
