Combine 95 4-runner transmission w/94 4-runner
« on: Jan 28, 2006, 06:26:04 AM »
First off thanks to BigMike for quickly returning my email!

We have successfully put a 94 body on a beat-up 95 4-runner.  The 95 had actually fallen off a transport on it's head(most rear top and back damage).  So I have a brand new engine and tranny from the 95 and most the undercarriage(long story).

But as BigMike mentioned to me Toyota tried an Electric Speedometer setup on the 95 tranny.  The 94 dash was setup for a Electronic setup.  I am DEFINITELY going to use the 95 transmission, so now I must integrate the 94 dash with the 95 transmission!

I have talked to a couple of Toyota dealers and they seem to give me conflicting information on how to do this.  What is the best suggestion solution and maybe the first alternate plan?

Any help?  The 3-wire (SPD, SP+, SP-) speed sensor is causing my friend some concern because he's not sure how to mesh the 2 worlds of Electronic and Electric Speedometer.

Thanks

I'd prefer not changing out the dash but if I did would it involve changing everything or just the gauges?

Just an update for everyone that contributed.  I changed the instrument cluster to the 95 and installed the speedo cable and everything seems to work awesome!  The PC Board was definitely different but all the connections were the same, the footprint was the same and best of all the Cruise seems to work without a hitch.

We did have to drill a hole the right size for the 95 speedo right behind the gas pedal.  The 94 didn't require the larger cable and the speedo routed differently; but that's a small sacrifice for such an easy solution!

Thanks to all for the feedback.  I've got a few more things to touch up on this conversion so I may have a few more questions.

By the way, I have enough leftover parts to build 3/4's of another 90-95 4-runner.  Where'e the best place to sell them?
