Duramax chevy.  178,000 miles and I'd put its reliability record up against amost anything, including my Toyotas.

425HP and 800ft lbs torque with my Edge Juice Box

dodge is good, but you have 5th gear problems in the old 5 speeds. Fords well just suck found on road dead or focked over rebuilt dodge lol. chevys were good till they put that allison crap trans behind them and your lucky to hit 75k with out it blowing up on ya. I'd stick with a 6 speed dodge, or a pre 00 chevy diesel.

the general consensus is:

Chevy/GMC older than 2001 are junk due to weak detroit diesel engines.  2002 and up are Duramax and the Allison tranny's behind them are the best in class.

Ford 6.0 diesel engines from 2003 to 2008 are loaded with problems.  Ford sued International/Navistar over all the warranty work they had to do.  The older 7.3 and the newer 6.? are better.

Dodge automatic trannys sucked until 2006 when they went to aisin's.  They really sucked before 1998. the manulas are ok but power adders on the Cummins engine will burn up a factory clutch in a hurry.  The cummins engines are pretty good engines all the way from the 80's up to new ones.

Cummins are a quality engine but ive seen to many problems with the dodge surrounding them. The newer ones have electrical issues.

The old 6.5 GMs aren't big power houses but they do the job for the most part. They do have some problems with cracking the blocks in the cylinder walls and on the main bearing griddle. But a very reliable engine none the less, its used it alot to marine applications.

Duramax's 01-04 had problems with the injectors and injector harness. Causing the injectors to stick open. The rest of the years have had very little problems and the newest ones have the most power with 390hp and 780 ftlbs.

The 7.3's are a built proof engine, but the pre super-duty (86'-98) ones have a tendency to blow head gaskets.

Now the 6.0s. They have their issues (Head gaskets, FICM's, high pressure oil pumps, egr coolers, turbos, wiring harness) But these engines are built to such precision that when people don't maintain them they break down. Alot of people don't know that 6.0l dont use 15w40 for oil (It causes hard starts when cold) They use a heavy duty 10w30 or 5w40. 15w40 is only used for very heavy towing. Head gaskets were the main one and that was a design flaw, not enough head bolts. put in some studs done, although you have to pull the cab. FICM's Get it re-flashed or replaced. High pressure oil pumps fail because of dirty oil. The pumps gears are made out of composite materials and will break down in dirty oil and break apart, thus the truck stops running and shrapnel flows into your injectors possibly clogging them up. Egr coolers... simple a delete kit. Turbos stop working due to carbon build up the veins which seize them up and builds no boost. The reason is because no one uses a diesel like a diesel anymore, they use them as grocery getters and never run them up to clean out the carbon. That and High sulfur diesel was a culprit. The wiring harnesses rub in some places causing it to short out and cause a hard start. But these engine do not deserve this, if ford didn't rush the 6.0 to the market it could have been one of the best diesels out there. Theres guys making 700hp on  stock rods, reliable! the 2006-2007 models have most of the problems worked out and can be found cheap.

6.4s I like them they can make big power. 1038hp on stock rods.

And the newest ford the 6.7. well only time will tell.

Trannies. Dodge autos junk untill the new ones
GM, 4l60e behind the 6.5s do the job. Allisions are amazing.
Ford, Torqshifts Ive never heard anything bad and the new ones behind the 6.7s are supposed to be better than the allisions. But im no tranny tech Its just what ive seen if you want reliability get a manual.

Ford Supercab Longbed Roll-Along Dually is what I run. 460 gasser, 154,000 k on it with no problems. Why this truck? Mainly because it was what I found at a very good price at the time, and what it came with. 5th wheel or standard ball hitch and a 18,500lb.towing capacity just about sums it up.

There wasn't anything that my dad couldn't tow with his 87 GMC 2500 2wd with a Muncie 4spd and a 350.  We were blowing doors off guys with the first gen powerstrokes uphill.  And that was with 4.10 gears.

If I had the money, I'd get an F250 and swap in the Cummins. Best of both worlds IMO.

Oh, and here's my brand

personal preference is chevy/gmc. looks, ride, power, reliability. with either gas or diesel they make good tow rigs.

for gas motors a big block from any of the big 3 works great. lots of torque, reliable motors, just not the best on fuel. best (stock) fuel economy i'm aware of is the gm 8.1L at 13-15mpg, offered in the 2000+ era though was discontinued a few years ago when fuel prices spiked. my 84 k30 with a 454 gets 9-12 depending on how i drive and what i'm towing.

small block gassers pull well, though on long steep inclines you will lose speed. most get better fuel economy than the big blocks, but not always.

diesels. all 3 of the newer diesels will pull great and each has their issues. with the 90's era motors the more powerful options were the ford 7.3L and the 5.9L cummins. gm had the 6.5L, was not designed to be a powerful motor for a 3/4 or 1 ton tow rig. easiest on fuel and capable of towing medium loads (single car or truck on a trailer) in stock form was definetly the weakest option. there are upgrades available for it and about 600ft/lbs of torque can be reliably reached. the 7.3L and cummins can both handle significantly more than that.

dodge finally got their auto tranny situation up to a reasonable setup in 06, though gm has had the most reliable auto of the 3 since the 80's and that still hasnt changed. th400 (3 speed 80's), 4L80E (4 speed 90's, not its 1/2 ton brother the 4L60E), and the 5 and 6 speed allison. manual tranny, all are very solid. gm discontinued theirs about 2 years ago, ford is following suit with the new body style so dodge will be the only option (stock) for those that desire a stick shift in a new truck. dodge had an issue with the nut that holds 5th gear in place with their 5 speed in the 90's but there are upgrades to fix that.

Im a Ford boy, love the old 460's in anything, throw a ZF5 behind it and go....

For todays standards,  would take a 7.3 crew or a 05+ Superduty with a 5.9 cummins swap. I just dont like the interior of the Dodges, and the chevys just arnt my cup of tea on the outside lol...

I work at a Ford dealership and except for some minor things the new 6.7 superduty is kickn.....  talk bout some power wheeeeeweeee
Those are some huge welds!
