Clutch Problems
« on: Aug 16, 2009, 11:44:43 AM »
Yesterday as I was driving home I noticed the clutch pedal starting to feel squishy and soft.  I started having difficulty getting it to shift at times and got stuck at a stop light once because it simply wouldn't go into first.  I never heard any grinding and when I got home I confirmed that the clutch master cylinder resevoir was essentially empty.  I did see some fluid on the front driveshaft, but the master cylinder area appears to be dry and the cylinder mounted to the bell house is also dry.

Any idea where the fluid is going?  :dunno:

Looks like you're all correct.  It's wet on the firewall.  Now I just need to call Toyota and confirm the part number so I can get some parts ordered from Marlin Crawler.  I've found that the 89 4Runner has some 88 parts on it so I want to be sure via VIN.

bd,
You might want to replace your slave cylinder while you're at it.  When my slave cylinder went, it only took three weeks for the clutch master to go out.

Both are on order as of this morning.  A few months ago I flushed the fluid when I changed the brake master cylinder and I think I cleaned too much junk out of it so now it has leaks.  The fluid in both the brakes and clutch was extremely dark and had floaties that I suspect were parts of the seals breaking down.

The master cylinder connects to the clutch pedal, I believe, so it's your master cylinder that's leaking.

It took a while to get the parts, but I got the clutch fixed tonight.  It turned out to be as simple as it looked like it should be.  Marlin was out of stock on the Master Cylinder when I first ordered, but finally got one in and shipped out.
