85 4Runner what should I do about gearing?
« on: May 23, 2008, 12:20:50 PM »
Well right now I have two options, regear my 4runner to 4.88 gears or leave it 4.10's and do 4.7 t-case gears.  Here is what I have done to my runner right now,  56" chevy springs in the rear, rears up front, All pro cross over steering, Downey limited slip up front toyota elocker rear.  MC rear bumper, Rock sliders  custom built front winch bumper with a Warn 9.5xp.   I'm running some steel wheels with 33X12.5 Toyo Open country MT's.  I already picked up a complete third member with 4.88's for the front but they are Genuine gear so I'm not sure if I want to run them, to regear the rear it will cost me 330. for the Yukon 4.88's and a master install kit.
Or I could just leave it with 4.10's and do a MC 4.7 kit, I drive the 4runner on my weekends and to work 1 day a week other than that it doesn't really get driven, so what should I do?  I'd really like to order the gears today if possible.

Thanks, Justin

Thats a toss up really, if you think you want to keep 33s for a long time, get the 4.88s. If there is a chance you might want to go bigger down the road get the 4.7s. either way you are going to see an offroad improvement, the better obviously with the 4.7s. I think since its not really a street driven truck just go with the 4.7s you will love them offroad.

Seems like you don't drive it much so I would go 4.7  :twocents:

Tricky.  Have you given any thought to a dual-range xfer case option?  4.10s with the dual-range are way more effective than altering the ratios.  That is, unless you need taller gearing to go down the highway or something...

Yeah, I contemplated doing dual t-case's but I don't want to have to spend the money and do the drivelines.  Yesterday I spent 360 and got some Yukon 4.88's and a complet Yukon install kit so I will just be regearing my E-locker third and saving up for the 4.7's next.  I decided to go this route because I always hate to see a lifted rig with big tires and stock gearing, I just want to build my rig right the first time.
Thanks for the input.  Justin
