1st gen alternator question
« on: Jun 12, 2006, 10:23:37 AM »
I changed out my alternator on my 81 p/u and need to know the order the positive wires connect. I think there is supposed to be a plug, but mine doesn't have that anymore and just has three wires that connect directly into the alternator. These wires from the factory are white (with a black stripe), yellow, and green. If anybody knows to which connector (or the position) each wire is supposed to go, that would be a lifesaver.

is there also a bigger wire??  or is the white wire a little bigger??

if you dont have a external regulator on the fender by the pwr steering res  then you will have 1 big wire to the bat post on the alt,  and 2 smaller wires to the smaller plugs,  1 wire is for the alt light the other is to start the alt  to charging

I do in fact have an external regulator, and all three of the wires that go to the alternator are the same size. They used to be in a jacket and on a plug that goes directly into the three ports on the alternator (which would in effect make it one), but that is long gone so now i have to figure out which individual wire goes where.

The big white one connects to the post. Looking at the back of the alt, The yellow one goes on the left side, and on the right side, the green goes on the top and the white/black goes on the bottom

Im havin some charging issues so ive been looking at that stupid plug over and over.

Thanks for the help lilbuddy. Got it going now. My charge light is actually staying on (as it was before I changed the alternator), but I think it's just a bad sensor because my volts are staying up there. I don't think I'd be able to help you on the charging issues, all I would know is to get the alt tested and check your wires, but I'm sure you've done that.

No Problem! But yeah, I got it working.
