Author Topic: Need Help! FEN vs FEL Alternator question (Read 653 times)

I recently got a 1981 4x4 sans motor and transmission. I would like to put my 20r out of my 80 4x4 into the 81 and reuse the 81 harness. Issue i am having is the alternator plugs are different. Green plug on 80 and black plug on the 81 harness. Is it possible to install an 80 alternator on a 81 harness? Everything i find is pointing to i need to install an 81 alternator and regulator for it to work. Or gm alternator conversion. Ive read sticky's till my eyes have crossed and cant find an answer.

I wondered the same, a while ago I replaced mine and had to special order in the one I had (can't remember if was FEN or LEF). Anyways, it came in and it was just the other one with a little adapter cable to change the plug. So yes, they are the same you can just swap the plug over. If you don't have the wiring diagram I can go take a pic later.

Pics would be appreciated. I need to figure out how to rewire the 81 harness to work with an 80 alternator.

Jeez, I forgot how hard it is to access the back of that alternator. Couple that with it being negative degrees out here and this is the best I can do, my apologies.
