Random squealing
« on: Oct 26, 2011, 11:15:25 PM »
So every now and again, getting more prevelant now that it's getting colder, my truck has a squealing that just happens. It sounds like a belt squealing but I know for a fact it isn't, when it squeals my steering feels the same and none of my gauges do anything.. It's coming from the front of the engine as far as I can tell. It usually happens when I take the truck out of gear and am coasting to a stop, it starts when it gets to about idle. To stop it I just step on the gas with it not in gear, but it's getting annoying and happening to often now. So any ideas what's causing the squealing. By the way it's a 1994 pickup 22re

squeal thats started since its gotten colder, coming from the front of the engine and goes away reving the enginesounds like a belt to me, maybe you should tighten them anyway and put some belt dressing on if they're vbelts.
If not you probably have a bearing going out in one of your tensionors, ac, or altinator. A stethoscope will help narrow it down if thats the case

Check the tension of your alt belt, during start up the voltage regulator trips to charge mode and puts a quick load on the alt which could cause the belt to momentarily slip on the pulley which will cause it to squeal.

I've got a 94 pickup with a 22re that squealed too.  Usually at slow cruising speed.  Would disappear when I stepped on the gas and return just as soon as I let off.  Couldn't figure out what was causing it.  5 speed stick.  No power anything.  Had the timing chain replaced at 194k and haven't heard the squeal since.  Perhaps there is a connection.

I figured it out. It was my alt belt, had to tighten it so the belt would hardly twist then it stopped

Well I had about 10 different people look at it including mechanics and nobody thought it was a belt with how it was acting so what can you do.

Since it has been slipping you may have polished the pulley, you may want to ruff it back up a little with some emery cloth to keep it from slipping again in the future. I had to do this with a power steering pulley I put on my 86.
