Is my problem timing?
« on: Aug 23, 2011, 10:13:17 PM »
I just did a complete rebuild on my 22r. I got it running and ran it for 5-10 minutes. Then it started sputtering and acting like it was running out of gas and died. Now it wont start at all. Could it be a tooth off on timing? It does backfire thru the carb making me think it is the timing. Any ideas?
I guess it could be the fuel pump maybe

I recently put a new engine in a 87 runner and it was doing the same thing.  I went thru all the fuel system ect ect.   It turned out to be the tps.  If the tps got wet or knocked it can be bad.  His rig was also back firing thru intake.

I looked closer and theres no fuel in the carb sight glass. I replaced the fuel filter with a OEM one and still nothing. So I think it may be the pump, because I removed the line between the pump and carb and nothing comes out when I crank it over.

Ahh its a carb'ed engine.  Then its a vacuum leak or incorrect vacuum lines.  Carb'ed engines are simple.  If you see fuel then move onto fire.  Since it does fire you have spark.  Then theres air.  Its getting air just too much.
Tho if your distributor is off a gear it wont idle or run right.  Loosen it and move it to full advanced position then see if it runs.  I am leaning towards a vacuum leak tho.
Spray some carb cleaner around intake and vacuum lines then try and fire it.  Also by advancing the distributor all the way it will help it stay running.  Then you can spray carb cleaner while its running.
If you want you can call me and I can walk you thru it.  925-270-5314 Josh  This is a simple fix and I know 22R's in and out.

Well, I got the filter and the pump replaced. It does run now but when I put the engine under load it wants to stumble on its face.

You could have multiple issues.
Did you match the timing marks on the T-chain and the sprockets?
Have you checked the timing to make sure it is correct?

I did do all of that. Went thru it all and got it fixed the main fuel line was clogged with something. I blew it out with the compressor. Guess I shoulda did that first.
