need opinions from people running ruf's
« on: Jan 04, 2011, 08:58:38 PM »
just finished a sas on my 86 runner and i used rufs. its a stock 86 4runner pack with a leaf thrown in from a f150 pack , 4 leaves all together. i also have about 150 pounds hanging of the front end , winch and bumper. I drove down to the muffler shop today to get my exhaust done and it seemed to bottom out when i would hit a decent bump and hit my brakes good. Now i dont have shocks yet im gonne be runnind bilstien 7150's, i was kinda wondering if those stiff shocks will help at all or if i should probably just go ahead and throw another leaf in the pack? my leaves are sitting pretty much flat right now too.

Those shocks will def help man but that is one thing i hear about that RUF swap is the crazy nose dive when street driving but all that really equates to is kick a$$ flex man! Alot of the best flexing trucks i've wheeled with have near flat springs or barely arched, it's all in the droop anyways. i say go wheel that thing with the shocks on (making sure that they dont bottom out before flex ends and you have bump stops installed) and see how you like it, cuz thats where it really matters right? No one ever said rock crawlers drive like Audi's on the street you know ha ha  Thats my    :twocents:

pretty much what he said but i think with one more leave it would be probably be perfect i no most peaople run 6 to 8 leaves. but i would leave it till you see how it rides with the shocks and then go from there.

I am also running 4 leaves on my 80 longbed. However, my buddy built a 4 leaf pack same as mine to put on his 4 runner and it wasnt near strong enough. I think he ended up with 6 leaves. Just depends on the vehicle and type of leaves used. For your application you may need to add more leaves to keep from bottoming out.

Mine have a little bit of arch which I like because it alows me to have more uptravel preventing the truck from leaning over when on the side of a grade or obsticle. I have about 4.75 inches compression and 6.75 inches of droop on a 12 inch bilstein.

I was running an RUF pack with one leaf added in front and 37's. I tried to drive it for a few days while waiting for shocks and it was so bouncy that ANYTHING would cause it to bottom out (about 3.5 uptravel). I stopped driving until I got My BBCS' and it was back to perfection. No shocks is no good....

I ran 4 on my 85 on 37's and it worked great. It was super bouncy and would bottom out hard on anything with no shocks- to the point you could barely drive down the street. I slapped some bbcs 13's from polyperformance and it was perfect. Shocks do a lot! :beerwhack:

I run RUF and CHEVY rear. I took out a front leaf of my pack to level the truck at first, after Dusi-Ershan and Rubicon, I put the leafs back in, and raised the rear .5 inch to level. I think you should play with your setup for your driving pleasure. Once you've been in your spring packs, its not that big of a deal to adjust.
