T Case Problems
« on: May 06, 2011, 12:37:19 PM »
Hey guys i just recently noticed a vibration and a loud humming noise comming from my t case the other day. I first noticed it when my girl and I were up at icehouse lake this last weekend. I thought i may have been caused by my non cv driveline but when I look that off and ran it I still noticed the noise. Its not a grinding but a humming. My theory is a bearing somewhere is going bad but i replaced them when my 4.7's when in last year. I noticed before draining my oil that I was about a half quart low.

I began tearing it down today and didn't find anything out of the ordinary. I used my smelling method to detect if any or the bearings had burnt up but no luck. I couldn't afford at the moment to put a cv on the rear just yet and I've got through 1 u joint since last year. I did notice the oil pump gear and speedo gear smelled a little burnt but the bearing underneath it was just fine. I never had any problems with the output shaft loosening up....

Any ideas? Thanks

No its a 5 speed. I thought the vibration was coming from my driveline but when I disconnected the driveline the noise remained coming from the t case. I figured not having a cv threw a bearing out but they are all fine. The only thing i noticed was oil pump gear and speedo gear smelt a little burnt. My driveline angle is not bad at all.

Okay the thing about noises like that is they can be hard to pinpoint where they are coming from, sometimes,

Put the rig up in the air all four wheels have someone run the vehicle and see if you can detect if it is in the Transfer case for sure,

Over the years Frt Wheel hubs have been blamed for Transfercase problems, and Rear diff bearings blamed for frt wheel bearings,
Point is noise can and will transfer around,

And then again check the frt driveline carefully as well

I have to agree with Wenhar (imagine that) the driveshaft can move sounds though it making you think it is one thing when actually it is somewhere else. I like you, thought my tcase was having an issue but came to find that the pinion nut had come loose or the crush sleeve had failed and made the nut loose and was allowing my pinion gear to drop down and rub the gears against the carrier. On acceleration the pinion would lift off the carrier but when coasting it would ride against it causing noise and vibration when driving.

My countershaft gear is hitting the case on the front side not the bottom or the side. That would explain things. What would cause this? its almost like I need a thicker gasket to give me more clearance.....please help. Thanks!

It seems like I need some shims to keep the gear from hitting the case.....I haven't heard on anything to use. It needs to go behind the bearing right before the gear to keep the gear from hitting the case.....Ideas?????

Their marlin 4.7's. Yep there was a snap ring on the countershaft bearing. If you think about it the snap ring only stops the gear from going too far in, my problem is that the gears coming to far out. Thanks for the help.
