anti-freeze coming from spark plug hole???
« on: Dec 04, 2004, 10:06:43 PM »
hi folks,
My wife took our 4runner to mountains today and noticed the exhauset had a sweet smell.   Her grandfather pulled one of the spark plugs and anit freeze came out.    any suggestions are appreciated.   I am currently in Iraq so I can't exactly see what is going on there.   engine has about 200k on it i believe.  '87 4runner with 5 speed.   Thanks again in advance.

Blown head gasket
If the truck is close to me, I could possibly help next weekend.

could also be a cracked head or a corroded water jacket.  machinist pointed out that the water jacket on the #1 cylinder was getting kind of pitted and close to the firing ring on my head, but it wasn't close enough to cause trouble yet

kyle, you do keep proper antifreeze in your engine,  pitting is caused by water trying to boil next to the cylinder

dude,  you either got a cracked head or a blown head gasket, either way head has to come off

Glen and Kyle,  Another thing to consider if you're gettin electrolysis in your head is to make sure the grounding strap that goes from the back of the head to the firewall is hooked up and in good shape.  I told a coworker about how mine was bad and the ports at the #3 and 4 cylinders corroded away and started dumpin water into the cylinders, and he says "I was wondering what that little wire went to", walked out to his truck and hooked it up.

And ditto on the service!!!  Even if people don't agree with the cause, they are hopefully appreciative and respectful for the great personal sacrifice so many selfless people have made.  God bless you and all the others who help to make our country so great and sacrifice so much!!!!!!!   Nate

no idea on what caused it...i bought the engine from a guy on a message board, and i'm currently rebuilding it.

the bottom end was spotless though...it came from a celica with an auto tranny there were no scratches on the crank and everything looked immaculate :ladys-man:

the head, well, it looks pretty good for a 22 year old aluminum head.  the surface is flat, just a wee bit of corrosion in that one water jacket.  i figure it'll run a good deal longer before it needs another overhaul

Y'know, the other day my friend and I were talkin about the corrosion problem in these engines and I had an idear.  I've ridden motorcycles for most my life, and they always require distilled water, so I started thinkin I should run it in my trucks too, just to stave off the inevitable,   Nate
