ebay spool or welded spiders?
« on: Sep 24, 2009, 05:45:22 PM »
found a spool on ebay for $70.  is it worth it, or would you just weld up the third?

welding up the third is a lot cheaper and really easy to do. might save a couple bucks and just weld it. thats what i did anyways.

how reliable is it to weld up a third?  thats the only reason i'm thinking of spooling it.  i just don't want to break welds and be stuck in the middle of no where.  its seems like lots of guys run welded rears.  i just don't know how many of them break.

i welded mine with a 110v lincoln about 3 months ago and i havent had a single issue with it. i did not put a piece of plate inside it. just welded all the spiders together. the truck has been my daily driver the whole time pretty much.

Ive seen guys run up to 40's on welded spiders..

If it was me and i never wanted to worry about it again. i would get a good spool..
Ive heard guys have problems of the welds breaking.   when i bought my welded diff some of the welds were cracked so i went over them..  with a spool you wouldn't have to worry about it.

thats what i was thinking.  i know a spool would be cheap but i would hate to break a weld on the trail, even if the chance of doing it little.  thanks for the input guys.

i have been running welded rears on my DD for years, never had a problem, i do have a set of "street" tires however because it really chews your rear tires up bad...  i have also had friends that welded theres up "not so great" the welds did break BUT all that it did was rotate a little bit till the spiders got jammed a bit, and im talken maybe a fraction of a rotation, if yea really dont care, just fill that center area with weld, throw some damn chunks of metal in there and weld them solid to.... hell weld the damn spiders to the case....the more the merrier....just make sure you wait between your welds, you can warp the carrier, also watch the splines on the spiders you still want to be able to shove the axles in there when your done.

BTW i spent my money i saved by welding my rear to buy a locker for the front..... just my 2c
Those are some huge welds!

I have welded 8 diffs with a 180hd miller never had one break and I have welded a couple 240sx diffs that are dd and drift cars none have broken and i have had mine out of my truck plenty of times since i welded them, no issues... I think it matters if you know how to weld it but they seem to hold up amazing for me and everyone else I have welded diffs for.

weld the :pokinit: out of it or dont do it. If you are concerned about it breaking... make sure it doesnt break. Are you are running gears or just have 4.10s? If you are still stock gears then weld the spiders to the carrier and dont look back. If you have gears and might want to replace the spiders later then weld just the spiders together and run it HOT! Or spend the $70 bucks and not worry about it.

I ran a welded that I didnt weld and I broke it on 37s. I welded 3 more after that and they didnt break. I never worried about it tho. If you are confident in your welding then it will be fine. :twocents:

If you DD your truck do not weld it or spool it.  I have a welded diff in the rear of my truck and I wore off 1/4" of tread in 4 months.  Im sick of listening to my tires complain every time I turn the steering wheel.  Save your cash and buy a easy locker when you can afford it.

I say the tire wear is well worth the traction off road..

But that is a good piece of information that most people overlook..
I would peresonally save up and buy an arb or elocker though..

I ran a lockright out back and it was just unpredictable, and you trade the chirping of the welded rear end for the clicking and jerking of a auto locker..  I prefer the welded rear end much much more than that lockright.  I think im gonna get a spool when i set up my next diff.  an arb would be nice but i don't have 700-800 to drop on one.

I personally like simplicity,
arb= air /tank /compressor /lines /wires
E-locker= control panel/wires/emotor to hit crap

I always run welded, I have a 220 mig and put 2 small square pieces of steel in there (1/4")
never had a problem, and Im pretty hard on it, I have broke numerous axles and never cracked a weld on my diffs,
just read on how to weld it it has been covered multiple times on here
However if you dd it alot and run Iroks expect to replace rears often.

ultimately I say weld it.

im with heath, simplify...... ive been running a spool for 5 years with tons of trips, if i had a welded i probably would have broken it by now, i had a welded for 6 months before i got my spool and when we tore it down the bearings fell right off. id go for the spool and not have any worries, spend $100 for peace of mind
